Steel LAMBERT of Great Dunmow - help/advice please
« on: Saturday 12 July 14 17:27 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I would really appreciate a fresh mind to help me find where Steel LAMBERT was born and who his parents are.

As you can see, I know a lot about him, but can't find his baptism anywhere.

Help! Please  :D
thanks in advance for any advice
Rosemary

I have the following info on him:

Born about 1776 (based on age at death of "in 83rd year") - I've checked the Great Dunmow CofE baptisms on Seax from 1770-1786 with no joy - no Lamberts at all.

Steel married Elizabeth WILSHER 25 Oct 1796 at Great Easton, Essex by licence; Steel described as otp, Elizabeth as otp formerly of Great Tey. [Note: haven't checked Great Easton records for his baptism as don't currently have access to Seax.]

Children all born Great Dunmow, some baptised at Coggeshall Independent Chapel: William (b1800); Jane (b1802); Elizabeth (b1805); George (b1807); Ann (b1809); Joseph (b1811).

1841 Census - residence Great Dunmow.

20 Sept 1848 married Jemima Elizabeth FOX at Independent Chapel, Great Dunmow - just received marriage certificate from GRO = widower and widow but no fathers' names/occupations (boo!). Steel described as a Corn Factor

1851 Census: Can't find them; apparently returns for Great Dunmow are missing.

1858 24 March - death of Steel reported in 2nd April ed. of Chelmsford Chronicle "24th ult., at Great Dunmow, suddenly, in his 83rd year, Mr Steel Lambert, many years miller of that place."

Hi Louisa,

thanks for looking! That is actually a grandson of the Steel Lambert I'm asking about - his older sister Sophia (b1824 at Dunmow) is my direct ancestor.

My difficulty is that even with the unusual first name, I can't find the birth/baptism of Steel born about 1776.

thanks

Hi

I tried G**gling this family and someone left a post on another site who believes that Steel could be the son of a JEFFERY and MARTHA Lambert.

In the 1798 land tax records for Great Easton/Eiston there is a Jeffery Lambert a tenant of a Rev. Mr Tayleure.

In Great Dunmow there is a Mr Lambert living in his own property, no forename given.

Hi Claire

interesting / hadn't found Jeffrey Lambert before - and can't find that hit myself (my google-fu must be weak) but will definitely take that as inspiration to search through the Great Easton baptism records when I next subscribe to Seax.

thanks very much

Hi Jo,

thanks for looking & taking an interest - I had spotted those baptisms already, but thanks for pointing them out in case I hadn't.

 - do you have any brilliant ideas of where to look that I haven't thought of?

thanks

Hi

Have you relatives you can pinpoint in Great Canfield ?

Found this obit. in The Bury and Norwich Post, and East Anglian on Wednesday, July 1, 1840.

" On the 17th at Great Canfield Park at the residence of his son-in-law aged 94, Jeffery Lambert, late of Blamsters Hall, Great Easton. "

There was also mention of an auction to sell off 'Buttles Farm' near Gt. Dunmow under the terms of Jeffery's Will.

From my last post the site to check is Curi*us  F*x . The author of the post has left several posts.

A few snippets:
Whites directory for Great Dunmow 1848 lists Steel as a Corn Factor and a Joseph Lambert as a Corn Miller. So possibly his son Joseph - keeping up the family trade.

Also found a newspaper article from Chelmsford Chronicle 19 January 1844 which reports  disorderley and riotous conduct in the Dunmow workhouse. One of the pauper inmates listed is a Steel Lambert. Would this be the grandson aged about 22? His sentence was two months hard labour.

The Cambridge Chronicle of 7 Oct 1848, reporting Steel's second marriage (20th Sept) to Mrs Fox describes him as a postmaster.

In the Essex Standard 07 September 1838, Steel is a witness at an inquest and described as the relieving officer of the Dunmow Union.

And although the report of Jefferey's death does not name the son in law, searching on newspaper archives comes up with references to J M Wilson esq residing at Great Canfield Park in 1834 and John Maryon Wilson in 1848, so as the dates encompass 1840 when Jeffrey died, this should give the lead to identifying his daughter.
