Roman Catholic Chapel of Ferrybank
« on: Tuesday 23 April 13 17:03 BST (UK) »
Hi there all,
I've just received  a copy of a marriage certificate, from Roscommon, for my great grandmother Ellen Keane and my great grandfather John Caulfield for July 1891. According to the certificate they were married in the Roman Catholic Chapel of Ferrybank in Co. Waterford. I've tried to look it up on Google maps to no avail. I would be very grateful if anyone has any information on the R.C. Chapel of Ferrybank, pictures, location etc. Another question I have is, it shows on the certificate that they both resided at Newrath. I have found a Newrath near Ferrybank and assume this is the location. Again does anyone have any information about the area especially in 1891 and is it in Co. Kilkenny or Co. Waterford. Your help would be very much appreciated. Many regards David.

Here's a link to an OSI map showing the church c 1890 :

  Ferrybank RC

Ferrybank is north of the River Suir, as is the townland of Newrath.

In most places the county border runs along along this stretch of the river - i.e. townlands to the north of the River are in Co. Kilkenny, south are in Co. Waterford, but Co. Waterford extends slightly north over the river at around Ferrybank. The Church was and still seems to be in Co. Waterford.

The townland of Newrath, which is to the west of Plunkett Railway Station and Rice Bridge was in Co. Waterford, but is now seems to be in Co. Kilkenny.

There was recent talk of further revisions of the county border.
Remember to check the Resource boards :  Ireland, Dublin, Antrim & Cork (and stickies at the top of other county sub-forums)

The first church was built in 1834, a tower and spire was added in 1867. The old church was demolished in 1903 ( the tower and spire was not demolished) and the new church was completed in 1906.

Thank you for that, I assume no image of the church exists then? David

There are photos of the church in the Poole collection of the National Library of Ireland, they can be viewed on the librarys website in their digital photos. In the search box write Ferrybank, and you will see photos of the church, it still looks the same today.

There is a William born in 1896 and baptised in Slieverue church, Co Kilkenny. Newrath Rd is under Waterford Urban no 5 but they are not here in 1901 or 1911.
