help finding Travers ancestors
« on: Monday 05 January 09 22:20 GMT (UK) »
I have just started doing my dads side of my tree
his mum was Born Margaret Hag(g)ans in 1908 in Belfast Co Antrim northern Ireland to James Hagans and Bridget Travers who married in 1887 he aged 19 she aged 20 in Belfast
On checking the 1911 census from county Antrim i have found that Bridget was born in Scotland her father was James Travers.

Bridget Travers and James Haggans had 12 children of which 9 were still alive in 1911 even though only 7 are on the census and Bridgets husband James Haggans isnt mentioned and she is down as married not a widow  :-\

Haggans Bridget  Chatham Street Clifton Antrim 43 F Scotland
Haggans Ellen Chatham Street Clifton Antrim 19 F  Belfast
Haggans Annie Chatham Street Clifton Antrim 15 F Belfast
Haggans Thomas Chatham Street Clifton Antrim 14 M Belfast
Haggans Patrick Chatham Street Clifton Antrim 7 M SCOTLAND
Haggans Christopher Chatham Street Clifton Antrim 5 M Belfast
Haggans Maggie Chatham Street Clifton Antrim 3 F Belfast (my gran)
Haggans Lizzie Chatham Street Clifton Antrim 8 months F Belfast

I see there is a gap between thomas 14 and Patrick 7, were James and Bridget living in Scotland from after Thomas birth to just before Christophers birth?
I was wondering if anyone can help me find out about Bridget travers born 1867 to James Travers
And can anyone help me find any children born to Bridget and James Haggans Or Hagans from 1896 until 1905
or even tell me where to go to look at the 1901 Scottish census Please

thank you
Colette

Hi

They are not on the Scottish 1901 so must have been in Ireland at that time

Have you checked the Irish 1901
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi Collete

Long time no see  :)

The IGI (extracted) has the birth for Bridget Daly Travers on 16 July 1867, Paisley Abbey to James Travers and Catherine Crossgreave.

This is possibly your Bridget.

Found this extracted record on the IGI:

Bridget Daly Travers
b 16 Jul 1867
Abbey (Paisley)
Renfrew
Scotland
father James Travers
mother Catherine Crossgreave

Does the middle name of Daly ring any bells? Sometimes these Scottish middle names can be a big help, or a big puzzle.  ;)

Were any of Bridget's children called Catherine?

Did Bridget and James marry in Ireland or Scotland?

Pipped at the post by Gadget ....  :D

There's also a sister, Mary Travers, same parish on 25 February 1865  (mother down as Kathleen Crossgreave)

According to surname profiler, the surname Travers is more concentrated down Dorset way:

Not too many up in Scotland.  ;)

What proof are you looking for Collete?

I could check to see if she died or  married someone else or is on the censuses in Scotland when yours was in Ireland  :-\

The Scotlands People site is down/slow at the moment so info on Patrick and a birth reg for Bridget is difficult to get hold of.

She's the only Bridget with father James for that broad timescale and the IGI is pretty good on the Scottish birth regs 1855-1875 ish  :)
