Hi Roger,

I am descendant of Andrew Smith and Catherine Fraser, who came from the Dunlichity area. I live in the US, but I have been to that area several times. Are you also a descendant?

Achvaneran is a farm located close to the Dunlichity Burial Ground, where Andrew and Catherine's parents are both buried, along with many of their siblings. Ray Collier, who is the nature writer for the Manchester Guardian, lives at the farm now.

I've shown some of the family tree information below. Andrew and Catherine (and you probably know this already) are buried in Dixon Union Cemetery in Ontario, Canada.

Thanks,
Charlie Fraser Larimer

Hi Charlie
Thanks for this information. I am a descendant of Finlay Smith, Andrew and Catherine's 7th child. He was my great grandfather. Until I got your email I never knew his middle name. Where did Affick come from? I have a picture of Alexander and Catherine Rose's tombstone at Dunlichity, but as you know her birth and death dates are not on it. Do you know if she was buried there?
I live about 1 hour from Dixon Cemetery and have all the pictures of the tombstones. If you would like any of them or have any questions I would be happy to help if I can.
Thanks for the email
Rodger

Hi Rodger,

I am a descendant of Donald Smith, Andrew and Catherine's 8th child. He was my great grandfather.

I have my genealogy information on a different computer and I won't have access to it until next week. I would like to send you all that I have, going back to Andrew and Catherine's parents. You can add to it/make corrections etc.

I have two sisters who live in Toronto, plus a Smith cousin (1st cousin) who lives in Bracebridge, Ontario. About a year ago I corresponded with another descendent of Findlay Smith, Donald Fraser Smith. Do you know him? I believe he also lives close to Dixon Union Cemetery.

I've made contact with two sets of relatives in the Dunlichity area and have met them; one set related to our Andrew Smith and the other set related to our Catherine Fraser. The two sets know each other. Our Smiths lived on a farm named Lagmore, which is directly across the road from Achvaneran (our Fraser farm.) This means that Andrew and Catherine would have known each other since birth.

I corresponded with a distant uncle of ours named Willie MacQueen, who lived in the area. He was in his 80s when we first started writing. Eventually I published a book of his stories called "Tales of Dunlichity - The Stories of Willie MacQueen. I would be very happy to send you a copy. We are related to Willie on our Smith side. His gt gt grandmother was Catherine Smith, the youngest sister of our Andrew Smith.

Donald Fraser Smith visited the Dunlichity area about a year ago, and also met our Scottish cousins.

I'll try to post more next week.

Thanks,
Charlie Fraser Larimer

Good morning Charlie
Thanks for this informaton.
My records show that your mother would be William Fraser Smith's daughter Margaret who married Robert Larimer.
Donald Fraser Smith is my 1st cousin. His father Andrew Hill Smith (Laddie) and my father William Fraser Smith (Bill) were brothers.
Andrew's father Alexander's tombstone says he was a blacksmith at Achlaschoille. Is this part of or near Lagmore?
It would be great to compare your information with mine. I could send you the picture of Donald's Tombstone if you don't already have it but I would have to do it to your email. I don't know how to 'attach' to Roots Chat. If you like send me your information to my email address (*).
And of course I would love to have a copy of your book.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Do you know if Andrew was the only child of Alexander and Catherine's who left Scotland?
Best wishes
William Rodger Smith

Willie MacQueen mentioned above was my mothers first cousin. His father was Hugh MacQueen, Farmer, Ruthven, Parish of Moy, Inverness-Shire  and his mother Marjory Smith. Hugh and Marjory married in 1877 at Daviot, Inverness-Shire. My mother was Isabella Marjory McQueen (Mc and Mac seem to be used interchangeably)  Happy to hear from anyone interested in further information regarding this branch of the family line.

Shennachie, do you live in the area? I will probably take a family trip back to the Daviot and Dunlichity area in 2015 or 2016.

Hi Clarimer -  I live on the Isle of Skye, Scotland - the ancestral home of the MacQueens of Moy. However I have many relatives still living in the Moy/Farr area. Be happy to meet you if you visit. Kind regards.
