By 1891 it seems they had moved to the town or village named "On Road between Houghton le Spring and Colliery Row" :D

In 1891 they were at Moors Farm on the road between Houghton le Spring and Colliery Row. Moors Farm is still there. Which you can see on the map at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=432942,549839

Is this the family in 1881?

Alice Winter    44
John M. Winter    8
John W. Barlow    19
William Longstaff    22
Mary I. Longstaff    18

Hi Stan, yes, that's them.

I haven't really looked into them much so far as my direct line is from Thomas's older half-brother, John.   Their father (also John) married three times & John was the only child from the first marriage as his mother appears to have died in childbirth.  Thomas was the last child of the 2nd marriage, and his mother also appears to have died shortly after giving birth.

We'd heard that the Winter family was reasonably well off somewhere down the line and it seems that John Snr was probably the source of that - possibly in part from his 2nd & 3rd marriages.

Added: My typing crossed with your latest post.  Thanks for that link to the farm.   Thomas seems to have done well - his probate shows him leaving £4130 in 1908 - whereas John died pretty much penniless.
