What i am wondering now....as Betsy is recoršed as the mother on familysearch.....if Betsy was the mother ( unkown father ) and james was the grandfather.

And maybe he was the "father" in the 1881 census and at her marriage ?

It was very common practice for illegitimate children to make up a fathers name when they married so as to appear "respectable".  It was often the name of a grandparent or an uncle or family friend - but sometimes it was completely fictional

 It looks likely  on many occasions fathers were either invented or grandfathers name used if they brought them up. I cannot pin down Betsey with confidence going forward however.

In 1876 his daughter Betsy had a child.
