Thomas Ions born 1793 Newburn. Is Mary Robson his mother?
« on: Friday 28 February 14 00:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am researching for my husband & we have found he is descended from a Thomas Ions baptised 1st Dec. 1793 at Newburn (father Thomas Ions but mother only named as Mary). We think his siblings are John (b. 1797), Ann (b. 1800), & Robert (b. 1802) all also baptised at Newburn (father named as Thomas Ions & mother as Mary Robson). Thomas Ions & Mary Robson were married in 1791.

The dates seem to fit so can we assume 'our' Thomas is also Thomas Ions & Mary Robson's child?

Guidance to find further information on this Thomas, & more on his possible parents (Thomas Ions & Mary Robson) would be greatly appreciated.

We know Thomas married Elizabeth Jobson/ Jopson in April 1816 at Newburn.

We thought 'Ions' was an unusual name but our searches have been hindered by finding this also listed as Jons, Jans, & Jones, not to mention other variations beginning with 'I'.

Regards.

Hi

Showing you a link to John and Ann's christening records, which show Thomas Ions was from Newburn and Mary Robson was native of Simonburn.

Hi

Have you tried the website freereg, lots of good info on there for Northumberland. Can't see a christening for Thomas but there is this for Mary, going on her age from burial record.

Mary dau of Thomas and Mary Robson christened 1 Apr 1770 St Mungo Bt. Simonburn.
Abode : Nunwick.

As Claire suggested have a look on free reg for clues,

There is a Thomas and Jane Ions in Newburn , they have daughters Jane baptised 1773, Elizabeth 1771,  and possibly a son Robert 1765 ,  daughter Mary buried , 1769

His wife Jane, aged 68, buried 21st October 1798 the record states widow of Thomas Ions Inn keeper
Gunning County Down,Kneale Isle of Man,Riddle Tynemouth,Bibby Kendal/Bradford,Colenso Penzance/Barrow-in-Furness,Steele Corney Fell,Chapman Ely,Dawes Alfreton,Blamire Westmoreland and Ulverston

Thank you Claire for your speedy reply & kind welcome.

It was really interesting to see the handwritten christening records of the siblings of Thomas (himself christened 1793 see: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JWV6-F7D ) whom I had known about, i.e. John, Ann & Robert.

I had also found a possible earlier Jane (baptised 1792), but was both delighted & saddened to read of Ann's early death & the totally unexpected Matthew & then another baby girl's short lives.

I had just started using FreeReg a few days before posting here & hadn't thought to check any burials yet. The dates you found for Thomas' parents burials do seem to fit & his possible mother Mary's christening at Simonburn too, thank you.

Thank you too 'Radcliff' for your also speedy help in looking into this.

About the Newburn Parish registers, I wondered if the Jane & Elizabeth (1770's) you mentioned had a different father to Robert (1765) as in his case his father was noted to live at Water Row in Newburn ( & 'our' family's father's occupations, when mentioned, include wherry man, keel man, etc. rather than inn keeper.....although the Boathouse pub is on Water Row, drat!!).

Please forgive delay in responding, I type when pain allows,

Regards,

Gail
