George Percy WOOD - merchant
« on: Thursday 28 February 08 16:18 GMT (UK) »
Dear Christopher,
I am new to rootschat, but am desperately researching family by name of Wood.
George Percy Wood (merchant) ? of Waterford Ireland (according to old family papers) married a Margaretta Kennedy ? in Belfast. They had a daughter Jane Wood who migrated to Australia before she was 21 years of age. She married in Australia and died in 1889. She was 42 years of age which would make her birthdate in 1847. The details of her parents were on her death certificate.
I would like to try to find her exact date of birth and where and why she migrated and also any details at all of her parents.
I thought the names may be in the directories or perhaps you could suggest where I may find any information.

Thanks in anticipation,
Joanne.

Hello Joanne,

Welcome to RootsChat.

I posted the following thread Wood listings in Griffith's Valuation extracts 1848-51 on the Waterford board. There's no listing for George Percy Wood although there are several for George A. Wood ... I presume he might be a merchant.

What denomination were the Kennedy and Wood families ? Were they  members of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland), Methodists or Presbyterians?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Hello Joanne,

The 1852 directory of Belfast and the Province of Ulster lists ...
George P. Wood & Co., linen, yarn, flax and commission merchants, 1, Talbot Street - Holywood (that must have been his residence)

Yes ... the Village section shows George P. Wood lived at Marine Parade, Holywood

The 1st Presbyterian Church in Holywood was built in 1841 and the Parish Church (C of I) was built in 1844. http://tinyurl.com/3dztma

There's no mention of him in the 1861 Directory of Belfast and Ulster.

Dear Christopher & Mary,

With many thanks for your replies. This is the George Percy Wood I was looking for - now I am searching for his parents!! Easier said than done.
I have found his death in 1856 and know he was married  to Margaretta Kenedy and have discovered another child. I think there are more children though.
I am sorry I did not reply before this as I had asked to be notified of any replies and was not.
I think he may have been in Waterford before moving to Belfast.
With many thanks and any other information would be gratefully received.
Best Wishes,
Joanne.

Dear All,

I am still searching for the parents of George Percy Wood, merchant of Belfast m Margaretta Kennedy, 3rd daughter of John Kennedy of Lurgan on 21/01/1840.
I have managed to find 7 of their children,Jane,George Percy, Maria,Margaretta,Florence,Eliza and Helena, baptized in Belfast.
George died in 1856 and Margaretta in 1859 and  some of the children were sent to the care of an elderly relative. ? Where.
I would be very grateful for any information on the parents of George Percy Wood senior and Margaretta Kennedy and the children.
I am now uncertain whether George Percy may have come from Sligo.
With thanks,
Bump. :D
