Unregistered births in Dublin

Would this have been common or allowed to happen in the 1880's and 1890's?

It was compulsary to register after 1864 but a lot of people did not bother for some reason or other particularly after they had a child baptised it was enough for some to do just that, however there is always the case of wrong spellings or mistranscriptions on the registers.

I have come across unregistered birth's from several era's, in some cases parents thought it sufficent to have a baptismal cert, I have also come across families who didnt bother to register births or deaths in the family.
Marriage certs would be easier to come by as it was up to the Parish priest or registrar to make sure there were entries for the event.

I understand you frustration.

And don't forget that, in the effort to enforce registration, the onus was also put upon the householder of the place where the child was born.

This led to many birth registrations being done by persons who were not the parents, or indeed, related to the child at all.  Thus the likelihood of names not being spelled as usual by that family is much increased.  Also the details given for the parents given names and occupations may not be accurate and Rotunda Hospital, in particular, but probably not the only institution, registered many babies without first names.

Thus whereas in England, an unnamed child would probably indicate perinatal mortality, in Dublin that was not the case, and I have come across a number of members of my family, including my mother, who were registered without any given names!

Well Dudley i am gobsmacked about your revelation re the Rotunda Hospital i was always wondering why my birth cert said just male as it was only in the last decade that i got into genealogy and of course growing up as a young man i had my birth cert handed to me by my mother whenever i needed it, but about ten years ago i couldnt find my own birth on Family Search,so i presume my mother re registered it at a later date.
