Duff / Duffe Skerries, Dublin
« on: Friday 18 July 14 19:41 BST (UK) »
G.G.grandfather, James Duffe died 1901, born abt. 1835.  His father according to marriage record at St Mary's, Pro Cathedral was Joseph Duff, Skerries.   James was a mason / bricklayer.  He married twice.  Second wife was Mary Gallagher, first wife also Mary (possibly Scallan - St Agathas church records for birth of Margaret Esther Duffe in 1863)  James Duffe lived at Marlborough Street / Dominic Street and later at Centenery Cottages / Williams Place, Dublin.   Any information appreciated.

Is this the same Margaret that you say went on to marry John Larkin ?

7 years of an age difference ~ not unheard of but are you sure that you are working with correct records ?

Hi Tara
Thanks for your replies - I cant be completely certain the records are the correct ones.   The ages are inconsistent between the church records and the census, however I believe the Margaret Duffe born to James Duffe and Maria Scallan in 1863 is my great grandmother.  Reasons ?  There was another child born to the same parents in 1858 - Maria Duffe.  Elderly relatives informed me that Margaret had a sister.  A Maria Duffe was godparent to Margaret's first born in 1887. I have records for the death of James Duffes first wife, Mary, in 1867 when they lived at Marlborough Street. I have no record of their marriage and don't know where they married.  As James was from Skerries (I know from my grandmother that her mothers family had a Skerries link) it may have been there.  I know nothing else yet about the Scallan link.  James remarried in 1870 to Mary Gallagher, from Garristown.  The church record indicates James was from Sherries and his father was Joseph.  They had two sons that I have found records for - Joseph in 1871 (died 1874) and James B. 1871 when they lived at Lower Dominic Street.  I'm still trying to link all this up properly.

The only record that I can see for this family is an 'embezzlement' one for James Junior.

Nothing else I'm afraid.
