finding the Hillmans
« on: Saturday 21 June 14 07:28 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I have Sarah Hillman b.19 Jan.1783 New Shoreham, Sussex.I know she married Stephen Brown( do not know where or when) and they were 1820 settlers to South Africa. Part of the same party was Thomas Hillman 25, Nathaniel Hillman 23 and Edward Hillman 13.
Can anyone link these Hillmans and possibly find their parents please.

There is a Sarah Hillman bapt 9 Feb 1783 at New Shoreham, parents Nathaniel and Ann.

Nathaniel Hillman married Ann Frost at New Shoreham 29 June 1767, according to the Sussex Marriage Index.  Nathaniel may be the Nathaniel Hilman baptised at  New Shoreham on 17 Oct 1742.

Nathaniel and Ann also had the following children baptised at New Shoreham
Thomas 7 Aug 1768
Nathaniel 20 May 1770
Ann 23 Feb 1772
Mary 31 July 1774
Rebecca 29 June 1776
Elizabeth 9 Aug 1778
Susannah 12 Nov 1780
Henry 3 April 1787

Nathaniel Hilman, bapt 17 Oct 1742 was the son of Elias and Mary Hilman.  There is a marriage for Elias Hilman and Mary Waterman on 19 Jan 1741 at Wiggobholt cum Greatham, West Sussex.  The SMI note says that the marriage was by licence and that Mary was from North Shoreham

There is a baptism 30 Sept 1744 for Ann Frost, parents Thomas and Ann, at New Shoreham.  The couple also had:
Thomas bapt 2 May 1742
Mary bapt 11 Dec 1746

A Thomas Frost married Ann Guilford at New Shoreham on 27 April 1741.

I have been trying to open the burials index for New Shoreham but at the moment it seems to have ground to a halt.

Apologies, I should have typed Wiggonholt cum Greatham for the marriage of Elias Hilman and Mary Waterman.

Also, I omitted a further baptism for Nathaniel and Ann Hillman, as follows:
Nathaniel, bapt 9 Feb 1785 at New Shoreham.  Presumably the earlier child named Nathaniel had died.  I am still unable to access New Shoreham burials.
