Was William French or Foreign and hence all of his childrens names are french sounding in their baptisms and then later they use the English variants?

Maybe catholics then as the names are names of female saints!

"A patron saint is a saint whose name is the same or similar to your baptismal name or its origin.  Do you have a patron saint? Probably. Nearly every baptismal name is the name of a patron saint or is derived from a patron saint's name."

Then that explains the contradictions  in the names on the census and baptisms then as they were probably given a baptismal name in the Church!

Finally it all fits together nicely  ;D

Both Ellen (Helena) and her Mum, Sarah, both died during the December quarter 1891.  Ellen was about 6 months old, and her Mum was 35.

I like it when a plan comes together - thank YOU !!

oooh dear ... I found Bridget .... on the 1911 census, she is aged 23 (b 1888) and living in The Home of the Good Shepherd, Convent of the Good Shepherd, Penylan, Cardiff.  She is shown as a Laundress .. I am guessing this was a Home for Fallen Women ....(as they called them)

Would it be worth trying to find records for it? St David's college is now where it once stood in Penylan.

Also might be worth looking at this thread by Arranroots where he also has a relative there and others give some good info on the place: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=116917.0
