Hugh Duncan b1835 Master mariner links to Dunoon?
« on: Friday 04 July 14 11:43 BST (UK) »
Looking for any comments on my great grandfather's links to Dunoon.
Hugh Duncan b 1835 Greenock, Father also Hugh Duncan - baker, mother Ruth Hepburn married in 1830 in Greenock, the family are on the towns 1841 Census except for the father. I have drawn a blank for the family in 1851 census as Hugh was away on a ship and the Greenock records have gaps for middle/new parish.
Hugh became a master mariner who sailed the seven seas then settled in Liverpool where he married, he visited Dunoon and on his memorial stone is the inscription Hugh Duncan of Dunoon & Liverpool.
I have traced Hugh's family in Liverpool right through to his death in 1897 inc his mother Ruth.
I can recall my mum & her sisters used to go on holidays to Dunoon pre war but cannot find any further info in old paperwork.
I've searched Free Cen & Scot P but only came up with Arch Duncan b1796 & his son Hugh b 1825 both of whom were bakers living & working in the town of Dunoon living at Duncan's land.
Any other suggestions for my family's links to Dunoon most welcome.

Have you tried familysearch and broadening your search a little from Dunoon itself? Maybe a Duncan family in a nearby community and someone spilled over to Dunoon at some stage. A first quick look threw up quite a few Duncans (including Hughs and seafaring connections) in Kilfinan. Maybe a bit too far away, but I wouldnīt rule it out as a possible starting point if you donīt find any better leads.

My grt grandfather Hugh Duncan master mariner listed his father on marriage cert in 1863 but recorded father Hugh Duncan Baker deceased when he remarried in 1871 - both marriages in Liverpool

How about the online archive of the Greenock Telegraph at the Watt Library.

Skoosh.

Thanks for your suggestion, we managed to visit the library & museum when lat up in Greenock. The staff suggested we went over the sands to Dunoon for more info but time prevented this further search hence my request on the forum.

These are the only bakers listed in Dunoon in the 1837 Pigot's Directory. There are no other Duncans of any occupation listed.
