Hitchcock's of Wantage?
« on: Wednesday 19 May 10 01:54 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any family of a man called Arthur Hitchcock who lived in Wantage around the turn of the last century 1900 - 1930. Arthur was the son of Thomas Hitchcock and Rachel Sturdy, and My 3x Gt Grandfather was brother to Arthur his name was John G Hitchcock.

There is a great story of Arthur racing the Wantage Tram in his Donkey and Cart. And the reason I am writing in the forum is because I just want to find anybody who may know a little more about the man.

Any help would be appreciated.

A Thomas Hitchcock was buried in Wantage in 1932...

HITCHCOCK, Thomas, 21 Mar 1932, 82, Wantage, SS Peter & Paul

His address is given as Wantage, Newbury Rd, The Downs.

Can't see matches for Rachel or Arthur, there are no more Hitchcock burials in Wantage

Dear Brant

Here is a scan of a postcard that I have.  Pretty self-explanatory!

My Mum remembers the engine that pulled the carriage - it was called Jane.  I have a number of other postcards from the same series that show various views of the tramway through the years. Unfortunately none of them have any details on the reverse, except for "Copyright FEJ Burgiss, 16 Newbury Street, Wantage, Berks"

Hi Brant

Please excuse the dodgey username, I just did that to grab your attention!

I'm a student. I live in Wantage but am about to go off to uni to study Animation. I have been approached by some people who work for the National Trust in my home town. They are currently in the process of making an installation to go in the Wantage museum, showcasing the history of the Old Tramway.

My plan's are to make an animation for them of Hithchcock's race.

Would be interesting to talk to you about it.

Okay, that's fair enough. I only found you by chance by goolgling Arthur Hitchcock, still in the process of researching that period.

The animation is a fairly long-term project but I'll let you know when it all comes together. Sorry that my posting is pretty much unrelated to yours and that I can't offer you any help, just thought you might be interested since it's one of your relative's history I hope to be animating.

If you know of any links for visual references or biographical texts, I would be very grateful.

All the best

Charlie
