Thank you for your understanding Cardiff, I didn’t want to lead your own thread off at a tangent. My new thread about Pool Hill School is quite specific about time and is directed at finding out about some of its former pupils, so is perhaps better as a separate entry on the forum.

I have some questions about Spring village too but because I’m not local to the area, I live in West Wales, I’m not sure if that is near enough to Pool Hill for them to fit into this thread either. If you think they would be appropriate here please let me know and I’ll post them as a reply.

Bob:
The fire view of the school is much more familiar to mum. She remembers lining up on the left of the picture and going through a door behind the single story building into the school. Do you have any more of these wonderful photographs ?

Ok; This is the information I have so far.

My grandfather, John Henry Wallington, Known as Jack, moved to the area around 1920 to work as a foreman at Johnson Brothers (Foden dealers) in Horsehay. Initially mum believes he lived at Coalmoor House, probably in Wellington, but moved to Spring Village shortly after. She thinks it was 15 Spring Village.
At the top of the lane lived her best friend Ada Humberstone and there was a Mrs Bott opposite who had a small shop in her front room. These two people lived either side of the gate and stile which led to the common. Also in the village was a Teddy Badshaw. She also remembers going to the cinema in Dorley with Ada Humberstone.

I’m particularly interested in finding out as much as possible about Spring Village at this time and the people mum remembers, and also about Johnson Brothers where my grandfather worked.

My grandfather was from Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire and I can trace his ancestors back to 1540; mostly in the same area. The last census available still puts him in Oxfordshire.

It seems there was a fair or something similar in or near Chipping Norton around 1920 and one of the owners, or someone high up in Johnson Brothers was so impressed with his abilities as a steam engineer he was offered a job with them looking after 20 steam traction engines; hence his move to the area. I know nothing else about Johnson Brothers other than the fact they were dealers in ‘Foden’ traction engines.

My family were in the Lightmoor area and the nearby Stocking Cottages for many years - still are in fact.  The surnames are Norry, Noden, Evans, Fowler. I wonder if Suehillwalker has any information on these families - or photos of the Lightmoor area, The Stocking or the Finney?
