County Sligo is basically an agricultural area although at one time there was a  weaving industry and some mining operations in the county. The Rootsweb Co. Sligo On-Line From FIANNAW site mentions the respective proportions of Catholic, Presbyterian, and Protestant (C of I) in Sligo were 90%, 8%, and 1% ... the figures are based in the 1861 Census when religious affiliation was first determined.

The Methodists in Sligo opened a meeting-house in Bridge Street about 1775. It was described as "a small tumble-down building with a thatched roof". In 1802, they opened a new church in Linenhall St. (now Old Market Street), and in 1832 replaced it with the present building in Wine Street.

Sligo Presbyterian Church was built in 1828 and the Presbyterian School was built in 1883.
