Kittie McIndoe and Bessie McIndoe Confusion
« on: Tuesday 20 May 14 16:26 BST (UK) »

Hi

Please could anyone help solve the problem I am having with a Kittie and Bessie McIndoe.

I have got the census records of 1891 for her/their mother Jessie McIndoe (MacIndoe) living in Ayr.

On the 1891 census Kittie shows as daughter aged 6 but no Bessie.
On th 1911 census Bessie shows as daughter aged 26 but no Kittie.

What is confusing is that Bessie aged 26 in 1911 would be born around 1885, so should show up on 1891 census but doesn't.

However Kittie aged 6 in 1891 also born around 1885.

I cannot found out if they are sisters or the same person, but seems odd to go from being called Kittie to Bessie?

Would appreciate some help as its driving me nuts now!  :(

Tom, are you working off the original image for 1891? You certainly will be for the 1911 census as this is the only way it is currently available. However, writing for 1911 may also be hard to read?

Guess, because you don't mention, you haven't been able to find Kittie/Bessie in 1901?

Kittie can be a variant for Catherine, see www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=kittie and Bessie for Elizabeth, see www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=bessie so quite different names.

What about birth certs? Have you looked at Scotlands People for possibilites?

Monica  :)

This looks to be the 1901 transcript (as transcribed). They obviously like to put the son first, rather in order of age  ::):

Jenie Maeindo 47 book keeper
William Maeindo 18 son Apprentice Architect
Minnie Maeindo 20 daughter Art Student
Nettie Maeindo 16 daughter
Mary Wylie 18 servant

Address: 27 xxx? Ayr

With 1901 showing a Nettie, this can be a variant of Janet, see
www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=nettie

There is only one birth showing in Ayr in 1884 (John father died in 1884?). This is for a Janet Mcindoe.

From the censuses we have:

Minnie - Marion
Kittie/Bessie/Nettie - Janet, likely down to transcription errors or difficult to read writing. However, checking the 1884 birth for Janet would help you confirm further.... ;)

Thanks for all of this Monica, I had found a Janet MacIndoe born 1884, but thought the variation to Janet was Jessie, so didn't associate Kittie or Bessie as being Janet, this would make sense though now.

The father is John Sands MacIndoe who died 1884.

I hadn't found the 1901 census return, but with those spellings of their name it is no wonder - Maeindo!, thanks for finding it.

I have seen the actual census's for 1891 and 1911 and the names Kittie and Bessie are clearly spelt.

Poor lass, she must have had it tough being called Janet, Nettie, Kittie and Bessie!  ;D

Hi Tom,
I know this is not the answer to your question but I wandered if the names below mean anything to you.
I have came across  a Janet McIndoe married Samuel Ferguson. Also the surname McIndoe is used for 2 other relations middle names. 1 is  Catherine known as Kittie and the other Janet.
I've also found that the surname was spelt MCINDOO as well.

Hi J

I have not managed to find spouses for William, Marion or Janet yet, as there are just too many people with the same name and age range that could be them and I have ploughed through so many SP credits trying to find their marriages and keep wasting the 5 credits with wrong records!

Thanks for info.
