Thanks KHP re the burial place for Flora (1892). Even allowing for the age discrepancy, Clinton would most likely eliminate this one.

Back to the drawing board!  ;D

Hi again...

A bit tenuous but here's another Archway listing which mentions a McDONALD in Whau Whau...

McDONALD Malcolm John - Whau Whau, Whangarei - Settler
http://archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=9390355

Here is his obituary...

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0164x/

...which says he arrived with his parents in NZ in 1860/61 aboard the Ellen Lewis.

If you search the following passenger list website for any McDONALDs arriving on the Ellen Lewis there is a possible family grouping which includes a John and a Flora. Maybe these are the parents and older siblings of your Murdoch arriving in NZ. Or maybe not.

Auckland Area Passenger Arrivals 1838-1889
http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/dbtw-wpd/passengers/passenger.html

It might pay to hunt down the original passenger list and see if they are a family. Maybe contact Auckland library or check FamilySearch.

It may also pay to follow up the Canada connection by posting on the Canada board.

Regards
Beg

The passenger list for the 'Ellen Lewis' appears in the 'Daily Southern Cross', dated 15.5.1860.

Hi again...

This is possibly the death and funeral of Flora McDONALD m.s McKENZIE

A printout of her death certificate should hopefully give some clues as to her origin.

-----

Have had a bit of a read about the voyage of the Ellen Lewis and her sister ships. A fascinating story. Although we've yet to make an actual link between your Murdoch McDONALD and the John McDONALD and family who arrived aboard the Ellen Lewis it might be worth contacting the Waipu museum and finding out if they have any info about passengers John and Mrs McDONALD and family.

The Great Migration
http://www.waipumuseum.com/html/migration.htm

Not sure but the museum may expect payment just for looking at their records. Seems a bit harsh. If that's the case you might want to wait a while and see what can be found elsewhere.

---

BDM records in Nova Scotia seem not to have started until the mid-1860's. I'm guessing that for events before then you would need to check out parish registers. As there's no knowledge like local knowledge you should ask on the Canada Rootschat board for their advice.

---

There is also a DNA project, known as the Normanite Project, linking Waipu in NZ and St Ann's in Nova Scotia.

It's called the Normanite Project possibly because the Rev. Norman McLEOD was the leader of the community.

Lots of genealogical info but not necessarily relating to your Murdoch McDONALD.

I'm fairly sure the Flora McKENZIE b.1812 is just a namesake.

I'm a very new user of this website, so here goes!
I've found a reference to a Murdoch McDonald - I don't know whether this is the right one for you.  I've been doing a bit of research on my own family, the McRaes, and found that Murdoch was the nephew and farming cadet of George McRae, owner of Stronecrubie Station in the 1870s. George McRae is not related to me. A long involved history for this station, as these things are! but it was formerly named Forest Hill, and was later named Erewhon Station with a different owner- that name was to be immortalised by Samuel Butler in his novel.  The name is "nowhere" spelt backwards.
You can hopefully find out more by googling "Erewhon Station", or maybe through this website.  Good luck!
