George Peter Hammond
« on: Thursday 24 April 14 10:32 BST (UK) »
Iam seeking assistance on George Peter Hammond, bapisted in Folke Dorset 9 January 1781. His first marriage to Elizabeth Barlett led him to go to Jamaica around 1802 and he lived there until 1820-26, he lived in Annan Scotland returned to Sherbourne, migrated to Australia and returned to the UK London where he died in 1858. His second marriage to Eliza Thomas (mullato) from whom I am a decendant. I would appreciate any help on his movements whilst in Jamaica, I do know that he was a trader(of some human slaves) as well as shipping sugar, coffee etc along the trading routes of that time. I thank you in advance for any assistance. kind regards

Hi
He appears in the slave owner registers for Jamaica at the parish of Clarendon for 1817-1822.
That's all I can find until he is on a jury list at Sherbourne Dorset in 1834.

yes, thankyou, I have lists of a few slaves that he purchased. He met his second wife in Jamaica and had two children there (this was before he married Eliza). He had shares in a ship in Annan the "lydia", which was also one of his daughters name who was born in Annan. i have found it difficult to find information of his movements in Jamaica, ship records, trading etc.

Hi Sharni,

George Peter Hammond is my great-great-great-great-grandfather, so we are somehow related, although I can't find a Sharni in my family tree.
I am descended from his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Hammond.
I have quite a bit of information and it would be great to compare notes.

Hi,

I am another descendant of George Peter Hammond and Eliza Thomas, by George Peter Hammond (jnr) and Hannah Huldah Hewett. I would love to know more about both Georges (snr and jnr) and their wives and children. I have so many questions!
How did George (snr) end up in Jamaica? What happened to his first wife, Elizabeth Bartlett - did she go to Jamaica too?
Am I right in interpreting that Eliza Thomas was likely a descendant of African slaves? Does anyone know anything more about her family?
Where did Eliza Thomas die - it looks like she did not make it to Australia with the rest of the Hammonds (on the Dorothy to Adelaide, in 1849). And if she did not come to Australia, who was the 'wife' listed on the passenger list of the Dorothy with George snr and three of his children? Was his middle daughter Eliza (who was 18 by this time) listed as his wife rather than daughter, in error?

Would love to connect with anyone who can help!
Tegan
