and regarding probate, unless you can send them a cheque drawn on a UK bank and in sterling, HMCTS won't be able to process your order.

As Willie predeceased Ethel, it might be worthwhile checking to see if she left a more recent will.

Thank you for the link: I had a look at it does seem one has to print out a form, enclose the requisite funds and post to UK.  Which is OK but slow.

It is interesting that unlike the GRO  and the National Archives [in many instances] there is no facility for online purchase.

Irrespective of this challenge I appreciate the link.

That would be great Dawnsh - much appreciated. As a matter of interest is there a period for which probate calendars are not online?

The National England & Wales calendars are online 1858-1966. After that you have to check them personally.

Some archives and local probate registries have partial sets.

I checked 1985, 86, 87, 88 & 89 but there were no entries for Ethel.
