Hi Angie

There is an entry for Helen on IGI, actual extract from the OPRs:

HELEN LAPRAICK  Christening:  20 DEC 1789  Sorn, Ayr, Scotland
Parents: Father:  JAMES LAPRAICK  Mother: MARY KIRKLAND

This looks like the parents' marriage from IGI:

JAMES LAPRAICK  Marriages: Spouse: MARY KIRKLAND
Marriage:  20 FEB 1789  Sorn, Ayr, Scotland

A parent search on IGI for siblings for Helen unfortunately doesn't show any more siblings. Not to say they are not there, maybe down to spelling variants of Lapraick.

In respect of James, there doesn't appear to be any birth records (actual extracts from the OPRs) on IGI before 1820. Have a look at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyAyr.htm#S
which shows what records are available by area.
Regards.

Monica

ADDED: I found two sisters for Helen. LAPRAIK without the C shows:

1. AGNES LAPRAIK  Christening: 06 AUG 1795 Sorn, Ayr, Scotland
2. MARY LAPRAIK Christening: 11 MAR 1800 Sorn, Ayr, Scotland

From 1841 FreeCen, this could be a brother/relative for Helen:

LAPRAICK James    40       Shoemaker        Ayrshire
LAPRAICK Janet      35                                 Ayrshire
HEADLEY    Alexr       14          Shoemaker           Ayrshire
Address: Sorn Village, Sorn-Ayrshire

There's also an entry for who could  be Helen's mother, living alone:

LAPRAIK    Mary    71       Dairy        Ayrshire
Address: Address: Gillhead, Sorn-Ayrshire

Hi Angie

That's a branch of my wife's line on the Lapraik side.

John was born c 1805 d 24/2/1859
He married Helen Lapraik( b c 1810 d. 28/10/1848) in Old Cumnock on 29/6/1830
They are both buried in the Old Cemetery in Old Cumnock.
Their children were
Marion b 2/1/1831
Helen b 26/8/1832
Margaret b 24/8/1834
William b c 1836
John b 20/11/1838
Agnes b 29/8/1841
James b c 1844
Janet b c 1847
George b c 1848

I can't help on John McClanachan's parents but Helen was one of 10 children born to John Lapraik b 1767 in Merkland, Sorn (d 24/2/1855 in Gilhead, Sorn)
and Helen Jamieson b 28/3/1768 b in Auchinleck. She died between 1841 and 1851.
Children were
Jean 1793
Margaret c1795
Sarah 1798
William 27/8/1800
Mary 1803
George 10/5/1805
Elizabeth c 1807
Helen 1810
John 1811
Marion 1816
All born in Sorn as far as we have researched.

So far we have 36 different ways of spelling Lapraik and the OPR shows them all. It makes it very difficult to make progress in this family unless you gather up all the threads of the children and follow the naming patterns. Thank goodness they were fairly consistent with that.
We have more on the Lapraiks further back but I'll let you get your head round this lot first. then you could get back to me via PM and I'll post up some more.
I was beginning to think that despite the size of their families there were very few Lapraik descendants left in the world.

Not sure you have the same Helen. Angie's Helen was born c. 1789, yours 1810?

Hi Angie

I was so excited the other night a prattled without reading my answer.

(Thanks Monica)

We think that your James Lapraik (married 20/2/1789 to Mary Kirkland) was the brother of our John Lapraik or at least closely related to him.
James and Mary had 5 children that we know of

Helen b 20/12/1789
Robert b 7/10/1792
Agnes b 6/8/1795
James b 4 /6/1797
Mary b 11/3/1800

We have not established a firm connection to the previous generation but we think his parents were James Laprak and Helen Johnston.
The OPR entries show his name variously as Laprak, Laupirick, Lickprivick and Likeprivick.
Her name as Nelly Johnstoun and Helling Johnstoun.
They appear to have had 10 children all born in Sorn

Agnes b or ch 7/4/1754
Andrew  & Jean 6/2/1756
Jean 30/6/1758
James 25/4/1760
John 30/5/1762
John 5/9/1763
Hugh 14/3/1766
Alexander 25/5/1769
David 14/11/1771

Does this fit in with your line now that I'm thinking straight again?

Hi Russell, Exciting info. My connection is through Janet born 1847 (daughter of Helen Lapraick and John McLanachan) Janet's daughter was named Ellen Lapraick Brown and this captured my interest. Thanks for your help. Angie

Although the posting is 7 years old, I am hoping some one is still active on this one.

I have been researching a series of David Lapraik individuals, that first shows up in Galston, Ayrshire in marrying Agnes Maxwell in 1794, and then he or or his son David move to Paisley, and become involved first in weaving, and then in dyeing. The dyeing occupation continued in the family from the 1830s until the 1940s, when they were in Ontario, Canada.

I strongly suspect the David Lapraik, youngest child of James Lapraik and Helen Johnston, and born in 1771 is the same individual who marries Agnes Maxwell a few kilometres away in Galston in 1794.

Anything further on the 18th century part of this family? Or earlier?
