Oloman (O'Loman?) Roscommon to Durham
« on: Tuesday 18 June 13 18:27 BST (UK) »
Family lore has Olomans coming from Ireland to work the mines in Durham. Earliest ancestor is William Oloman b. !809 Penshaw, Durham. All family members worked in the coal mines
One of William's grandsons, Thomas, married Anastasia Tansey whose parents Michael Tansey (b. circa 1843) and Jane nee Lavin (b. circa 1846)  came from Roscommon.

Any help in substantiating (or dismissing) this family story is appreciated.
Thank you.

Claire:
Thank you very much for sharing your research. This line seems to fit better with residences/birthplaces of other descendants. Will continue to work away with renewed vigor.

Hello switzd

I have been following this same family on a different Rootschat board this week,  under the topic "Thora OTTOMAN - where was she born?" See http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,650854.0.html

We found Thora's surname was actually Olloman and she appears to be descended from the same ancestor who you mentioned  - William Oloman born about 1811 at Penshaw in Co Durham.

The surname is more often mis transcribed than not! I've found several variations already.

Yes  I too have found many variations. So far Hollowman (William b. 1783, most distant ancestor) , Hallowman, Olloman, Ollaman, Oliman, Olieman, and Oloman.

My father's-in-law record has Thora as granddaughter of George Ollaman (b. 1851 Rainton, Durham) and Margaret Jane Owen (b.1851 County Durham). Thora's father was William Francis Olloman (b.1875 Darlington, Durham); mother Ellen Thew (B. 1878, Gateshead, Durham).

Gen , I note this is a distant relative, but if you wish more info regarding the Olomans in all their various names, let me know via private communication

When I first found Thora's maiden name it was mis-transcribed on the FreeBMD site as Ottoman. As you may guess, I was expecting an exotic background to the family. After finding it was really Olloman and I could follow the family quite easily back through the census, I changed my first opinion. They seemed to have been in County Durham for a very long time.

It is an unusual name up here in the North East and there do not seem to have been that many OLLOMAN's in later censuses. Too many girls born on our sprig of the tree.

I have now satisfied my curiosity regarding Thora's parentage so will move on to more family mysteries. Good luck with sorting out your many variants.
