McCutcheon
« on: Tuesday 15 July 08 14:12 BST (UK) »
I'm researching McCutcheon, Lemond, White and Broadfoot surnames in the Monreith and Glasserton area of Wigtownshire before 1900.
Would like to chat to anyone with one or more of these names in their tree.

Best wishes

Hi Lynn,

I have a McCutcheon line in Wigtown - I'm actually trying to get them back beyond 1855 records at the moment.

Hugh MCCUTCHEON married Martha AULD, 1779, Sorbi, Wigtown

They had Susan McCUTCHEON, 1801, Sorbi, Wigtown (all I know of so far) and she married Robert NEIL, 1832, Sorbi, Wigtown - prior to this he had married Mary MCMILLAN, 1826.

Hi,
I can't see a connection, but I'm sure there may be one somewhere along the line.
I'm researching my grandmother's line. She was Sarah Broadfoot McCutcheon, she was born in Monreith 1893, her father was Hugh McCutcheon 1864-1930 and her mother was Margaret Jane Lemond 1857-1940. All are from Wigtownshire. Margaret was born in Mochrum, and Hugh in Barwinnock.
I don't have any McCutcheons in Sorbie (that I am aware of). But you never know! :0)

Thanks for such a quick reply. I'm new to Roots Chat.
Best wishes

That's okay Lynne - I'm relatively new too!

My McCUTCHEON'S are obviously quite a bit older than yours at this stage so let's see if they meet in the middle somewhere. :)

I can go back another generation on the McCutcheon side (I've spent a small fortune on Scotland's People).

Hugh McCutcheon's father was also called Hugh McCutcheon 1827-1891 and he was born in Glasserton. He married Agnes Broadfoot in Glasserton 1861. And his father was called William McCutcheon and (I think, but I wouldn't put any money on it) he was from Whithorn. And Hugh's mum was Margaret Thomson. Margaret Thomson was from Sorbie.

And that's my wall.

Best wishes

Hi Lynn and Fiona,
Do either of you have a Helen Cutcheon/McCutcheon?  I have a baptism record from Glasserton dated 17 July 1827 for Agnes Ker illegitimate daughter of John Ker and Helen Cutcheon.

In 1841 Agnes is living in Whithorn with her father John and his wife Jane McClellan (have seen several variations of this name).  Agnes married William McKeachie 6 November 1856 at Barrachan, Mochrum Parish but for the most part they resided at Moorpark in Kirkinner.  On the marriage record it shows Agnes' mother as Helen Ker maiden name McCutcheon - deceased.

Other than that, I don't have any other information about Helen.  John Kerr was a sea captain and lived in Whithorn until he died in 1887.

Another interesting connection - William & Agnes' sons William and John both worked at a farm called West Mains owned by siblings Peter, Grace, James and Jane Broadfoot.  I believe the Broadfoot's also owned farms called East Mains and The Crook.

The son William met his wife Ellen Steel while working on this farm.

Hi MaryAnn,

I don't have a Helen yet, but then again, I only have found one child to Hugh McCutcheon and Martha Auld, neither do I have Hugh's siblings yet, so at this stage - no, but who knows, maybe later. :)
