Whitelees - where is it?
« on: Wednesday 22 June 11 01:26 BST (UK) »
I am unable to find anything on maps or on google about Whitelees.  Margaret Lawson, wife of Thomas Armstrong, died at Whitelees 21 March 1848 aged 58.  This piece of information appeared on a Headstone in old Carruthers Cemetery (aka Crowdieknowe) near Waterbeck.  So far the OPRs on Scotlandspeople do not record this death - I am aware that the OPRs do not cover every area.

The same Headstone records Thomas Armstrong dying 19 October 1843 aged 49, of Debate.

Was Whitelees a small hamlet with a church, or the name of a farm?

Thank you, Gazania

Hi

On the old  OS maps, Whitelees is to the NE of Waterbeck - between Waterbeck and Crowdieknowe.  On a modern map it is called Whiteleys. Here's a location map.

I've just zoomed in on the map link that I gave you and find that Whitelees appears on that zoom  just close by to Whiteleys - I think it looks like a single farm now.

Thank you, Allan and Gnu, for your help.

Whiteleys looks like the location and the more modern spelling.  I'll get busy now to find out more about the area.

All the best in your research, Gazania.

Whitelees, Waterbeck is a name I heard often from my grandmother who was a native of Waterbeck.  I am researching the Armstrong, Stodart and various other local families with mixed success as the local records do not exist around the turn of the 18th/19th century.  If you have anything more on the Armstrongs I would be happy to share with you by private message.  The Armstrongs came into Water beck from Canonbie and Newcastleton at the end of the 18th Century and seem to have farmed a great number of the farms around the village as did the Stodarts who came from Wauchope near Langolm.
