Brown/ Anderson
« on: Monday 24 March 14 09:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi I'm not sure if this is the right place as this query covers Slamannan, Airdrie  Lanark and New Monkland, but I'm sure someone will put me right, .  My line is Christina Brown, June 15 1863 Airdrie her parents Robert Brown and Margaret Anderson, Robert and Margaret married 1 Nov 1851 at Airdrie. Margaret's parents are Thomas Anderson and Agnes Shaw , I can find Margaret on 1841 and 1851 census with Thomas a widow but I can't find a suitable entry for Robert, on Christina's marriage line in 1886 he is said to be " shoemaster (Master)", yet the only suitable census I can find for Robert and Margaret Brown is 1871 when this Robert is said to be "engine keeper" 1 Meadowfield cottages New Monkland, I thought Robert maybe one born Slamannan August 10 1825 his parents Robert Brown and Janet Danskin, this one fits as later generations have Danskin as a middle name, any help will be much appreciated , Nikitah

Hi Nikitah

Have you found siblings for Christina to let you reconfirm father's details? There are a few couples I think with the same names as Christina's parents, but from the places you mentioned, I thought these could be siblings:

Margaret 1856 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQSM-3JW
Robert 1858 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQP5-4YX
Robert Anderson 1861 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQPG-K5X

There might be some more. I just show these as your Christina also was born in New Monkland in 1863 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQ91-6NY.

This is from 1861. Getting confusing!:

Robert Brown 35 Manager Of Coal Pit b. Slamannan, Stirlingshire
Margaret Brown 36 New Monkland, Lanarkshire
Agnes Brown 8
Janet Brown 7
Margaret Brown 5
Robert Brown 2
Thomas A Brown 3 Months
Janet Murphy 15

Address: 2009 Private House Near Auchengray Pit, New Monkland, Lanarkshire

Too many different occupations for possible father Robert. Something may not be right.

Have you got Christina on later censuses to confirm her birth place. Her death cert, have you got this to check what it says about her father?

This is the entry you have for 1871 after Christina's birth?

Robert Brown 44 engine keeper b. Southfield, Lanark
Margaret Brown 45 b. Langdale, Lanark
Agnes Brown 16 b. Auchengray, Lanark
Janet Brown 14 b. Auchengray, Lanark
Margaret Brown 12 b. Auchengray, Lanark
Christina Brown 9 b. daumbow, Lanark

Address: Cottage Meadowfd No 1, New Monkland

Ages slightly out, but daughters' names do seem to match that 1861 entry (Robert and Thomas not showing). Birth places also would need to be checked.

Christinia Brown 17 domestic servant b. New Monkland, Lanarkshire

Address: Meadowfield Near Roughrigg, New Monkland

Many thanks Monical,, You are picking up the same as me , Christina married Alexander Samuel, she only had one child that survived , Margaret, I'm sorry to be vague my sister has the census for Christina with Alexander in, i think 1881, before Margaret was born they have a adopted Son, if I remember rightly his name is Robert Mclay, two years after Margaret was born Christina died , Robert disapears,, I think I found some of the babies one being William Gentleman Samuel , I'll see what my sister has, I know Alexander and Christina married at Airdrie/ New Monkland, thanks for your interest I'll go and see if there's anything else, Nikitah,

Father Robert must have retrained! From 1891, this may be Robert (widowed?):

Robert Brown 65 shoemaker b. Slamannan, Stirlingshire
James Munro 39 son in law coal miner
Janet Munro 36 daughter
Christina Munro 10 grandchild
Lily Munro 6 grandchild
Agnes Munro 3 grandchild
James Munro 1 grandchild

Address: No 2 Meadowfield Cottages, New Monkland

We had a daughter Janet in both 1861 and 1871. You can also double check other certs to see what shows.

Robert McLay 3 Months Adopt Son b. Falkirk, Stirling

Address: Bryer's Land, New Monkland

Thanks Monica, these are the ones I  was following the confusion was Robert's Occupation, I didn't connect Robert to the Munro's but I think you might be right. I think Margaret Anderson was the Daughter of Thomas Anderson and Agnes Shaw, so Agnes  would be right for the naming pattern . also the William Gentleman Samuel  who was born to Alexander Samuel and Christina Brown, I found a Margaret Anderson  married a William Gentleman , not sure how that works though as far as naming patterns go. I'm still waiting for the info from my sister I only looked at it yesterday but the brains not what it used to be. I'll go and fit it all together and  get back to you. just had a thought If Robert was involved in the pits maybe he had a accident or took the blame for a accident and was forced to retrain. I'll have a look and see if there's anything on line , once again thank you. Nikitah
