Farm names
« on: Saturday 08 November 14 12:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I was wondering if anyone knows of a farm possibly in the stirling area called something like primrose farm? Operating around the 1930's?

Thanks  :)

J

Jojo,  how about Powis Mains, NE of the town, Polmaise, Cambusbarron, or Lower Polmaise, at Fallin.

Skoosh.

Hello Jojo,
Old maps have a Polmaise Castle (South of Cambusbarron) & Polmaise Home Farm (South-east of Cambusbarron, on the road to Torbrex & St Ninians)

               http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/

     Find a Place:
Type in St Ninians, Stirling in the Gazetteer/ NG Ref. box.
     Choose an historic map overlay:
          1. Select a category: Choose Scotland rather than Great Britain.
          2. Select a map/map series: OS Six Inch, 1892-1905.
That map names the farm as Polmaise Home Farm. On 1921-1930 map it's just marked Home Farm.
Scroll down (left side of map) to Change transparency of overlay: Use <> to change to satellite view. Home Farm still there along side M9 but Polmaise Castle along with it's gardens & curling ponds has gone. (Love this website)
               Regards,     Dod.

Hi

There was a Primrose Farm located just to the north west of Rosyth.  The attached ref (http://maps.nls.uk/view/82882266) shows it on the 1927 OS 25" sheet.

This location would now appear to be a small housing development at the junction of Grange Road, and Primrose Lane, Rosyth.

If you Google "Primrose Farm" + Rosyth there are several references to it.  Hope this is the farm you are looking for.

Regards,
Istrice

Jojo, you need to get hold of a few solid facts, as what you have said so far is rather vague.

If you are sure the farm was in either the county or parish of Stirling, it can't be Rosyth which is not even the next county (Clackmannanshire lying in between) let alone a neighbouring parish.

What is the surname of the family who you think were living there, and do you have any of their given names? (Be careful not to to reveal information about anyone who is or may still be living, as that isn't allowed on RootsChat).

If you have names and dates, you could check the birth and death indexes on Scotland's People to find out which registration district they lived in, which will narrow your search considerably.

Once you know the district, you can search (or get someone else to search for you) the valuation rolls and registers of electors from the 1930s.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
