HARRIS family
« on: Friday 04 February 05 09:12 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace information on my maternal great grandmother, LAURA  HARRIS, whose family came from Cornwall. She was born about 1860 ( not sure whether it was Cornwall or Ireland) and died in 1898, in County Galway, Ireland. She married Timothy McNiffe and had ten children.
Laura's father would have been born about 1830 in Cornwall. He was a coastguard and served in Clifden and Bunowen Stations in County Galway around 1860 - 70.
I know that there are a lot of Harris families in Cornwall and that I do not have much information to go on, but if anyone thinks that they can help me I would appreciate a reply.

I have found on a coastguard website a reference to the 1891 Census mentioning a John Harris, aged 68, retired officer, living in Flushing, which I believe is near Penryn.

That would mean that he was born in 1823, which is about the right timescale to have a daughter, my great grandmother Laura, who was born about 1860. Laura's father moved to Ireland and worked as a coastguard and when he retired he returned to Cornwall.

If this John Harris was Laura's father and was working in Ireland at the time, he would not appear on the 1871 Census
and probably not the previous one for Cornwall.

Would anyone know how I could find more information on this John Harris ?

The coastguard John Harris you mentioned in the 1891 is my husbands grt grt grandfather and was born in 1822 in Flushing. He is not Laura's father. He had one son and six daughters.

Hello jacih,

Thank you for your message. I think that my Harris's may have come from Devon and not Cornwall.
