So Rosie99, I just thought I'd let you know that those two adopted kids were definitely George and Mary Ann's. After I finished swooning on the chaise longue, I started combing indices. I've got IOW baptisms with correct parents for Edith and Bertha.
And what were they doing with their grandparents in the 81? Well, get out yer hanky:
1868: Mary Ann Allen marries George Wilshire in Bristol
1871 census: Mary Ann & George Wilshire with nephew Charles (Mary Ann's sister Hannah's son) in Haylands, near Ryde, IOW
1871 census sister Hannah with her Stooke family in Bristol
1871 census Rest of family?
1871 16 July Bertha Wiltshire bap St Michael Ryde IOW
1875 26 Sep Edith Annie Wilshere bap St Michael Ryde IOW
1875 24 Nov George Wilshere dies of pneumonia in Ryde, IOW
1877 18 August Mary Ann remarries a widower with children still at home: Henry Dunford
1877 And dies in the last quarter of the year [Mary Ann Dunford]
The kids go to the grandparents:
1881
William 72 Ashby De La Zouch, Leicester.;
Hannah 73 Stafford; Edwin 44 Worcester, Worcestershire
Adopted Children
Bertha Wiltshire 9 IOW
Edith Wiltshire 5 IOW
And then the trail gets rocky. Other than a possible Edith sighting in 1901, the girls disappear.
I shall try harder to find them today, but just thought you might like to hear the story.
And I'm so excited to have two new 4 times removed half-cousins to chase! (No seriously, really!)
Thank you, thank you again for your help!
