I found the 1851 & 1861 and as I was posting found the 81 with the Wiltshire girls.  I think that sealed it.

William & Hannah seem to change their place of birth often.

Still missing the 1841 though.  ::)

Now I am looking for George  ;)

Where is Martha with the two children in 1841 - what was her maiden and married name.

We've had fun with "find George" on rootschat already.
If you read this message:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=432721.msg2976473#msg2976473
and forward, you'll discover my theory of why George's last name was probably Clements.

Let me know what you think. Have I missed something obvious?

And now, if this 1871 clue gives me a marriage certificate, I might have a father's first name.

Inch by inch, I'll get him, my elusive George!

Hi

"Let me know what you think. Have I missed something obvious?"

Personally, I would have liked knowledge of the other post to start with.

Can I ask why?

I''m curious, because if there's a principle of posting involved, I'd like to understand it so that I don't repeat an annoying practice.

In trying to find the family of George's second wife and her nephew, his background didn't have much bearing on the actual search, other than explaining my motivation for chasing the info so assiduously.

How should I have drawn up the problem differently?

And I am sorry if you thought I was peddling red herrings or holding back important details.

So Rosie99, I just thought I'd let you know that those two adopted kids were definitely George and Mary Ann's. After I finished swooning on the chaise longue, I started combing indices. I've got IOW baptisms with correct parents for Edith and Bertha.

And what were they doing with their grandparents in the 81? Well, get out yer hanky:

1868:  Mary Ann Allen marries George Wilshire  in Bristol
1871 census: Mary Ann & George Wilshire with nephew Charles (Mary Ann's sister Hannah's son) in Haylands, near Ryde, IOW
1871 census  sister Hannah with her Stooke family in Bristol
1871 census Rest of family?
1871 16 July Bertha Wiltshire bap  St Michael Ryde IOW
1875 26 Sep Edith Annie Wilshere bap  St Michael Ryde IOW
1875 24 Nov George Wilshere dies of pneumonia in Ryde, IOW
1877 18 August  Mary Ann remarries a widower with children still at home: Henry Dunford
1877 And dies in the last quarter of the year [Mary Ann Dunford]
The kids go to the grandparents:
1881
William 72 Ashby De La Zouch, Leicester.;
Hannah 73 Stafford; Edwin  44 Worcester, Worcestershire
Adopted Children
Bertha Wiltshire 9 IOW
Edith Wiltshire 5 IOW

And then the trail gets rocky. Other than a possible Edith sighting in 1901, the girls disappear.
I shall try harder to find them today, but just thought you might like to hear the story.

And I'm so excited to have two new 4 times removed half-cousins to chase! (No seriously, really!)
Thank you, thank you again for your help!

Brilliant, that's helpful. Thank you.

I've got them both now -- more or less -- in 1901 and 1911.
I got some specific lookups from the Gloucestershire forum, seeing as it seems they had at that point settled down in Bristol.

1901 Bertha, @ Brandon Hill, Bristol, age 29, listed as married (but no husband present... and she is unmarried in the 1911 with same 2 kids)
Kathleen W aged 2 born Bristol
Sidney aged 4 mo born Bristol

Edith -- housemaid in Bristol.  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XSDX-F5B

1911  Bertha W aged 38 single b unknown Needleworker
Kathleen Mary Wilshire aged 12 b Bristol
Sidney aged 10 born Bristol

Perhaps Edith in Bristol on the free search for 1911.  Edith Wiltshire age 34 b 1877
Do you have access? Could you look to see the place of birth?

A marriage for Bertha?
Bertha E Wiltshire
Volume: 6A  Page: 330 Line Number: 29   https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/26N8-44C
and a death that makes this Bertha the right age: Jun 1938  EDMUNDS    Bertha E    64    Bristol    6a   86

I'm still trying to locate them in the 1891. I'm slowly ruling out family they could be staying with.
Not with the grandparents they were with in 1881, as they are with their daughter Elizabeth Adams, nee Allen, in Stapleton. Not with Aunt Hannah Stooke, nee Allen. I'm on to finding cousin Charles Stooke's family then Aunt Ann. Then check images whether they're there. Then if not there, check the family Edith is working for in 1901 in the 1891 and 1911.  Oh, it's all fun and games!

Oh, and of course, now that there's a son, Sidney Wilshire, I'll have to see if I can find signs of him, too!
