Patrick Harris - born Summerhill, Meath 1825
« on: Monday 14 September 09 12:17 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have been trying to locate the birth town of my Gt-~Gt-Gt Grandfather Patrick Harris.

He came to England (probably after 1861 as I can't find him on the England 1861 census).

He married in Middlesex in 1864, but his name is John Harris - son of John Harris (a Farmer).

He then lived in Kent as Patrick Harris.

All census records only state Ireland as his place of birth.

His death certificate in 1890 states that he is 63, so born about 1826-1827.

Census records put his birth to about 1827-1830.

My uncle believes that he came from Meath, but couldn't be sure.

I had given up on his birth until the new Irish search database has found a Patrick Harris, son of John Harris - baptised in summerhill (Roman Catholic), Meath in 1825.

There are also Patrick Harris' son of john Harris born in Co. Kildare in 1826 and in Co. Roscommon in 1828.

I could order the details, but if they all state Patrick Harris, and son of John, I will not be able to determine which Patrick is mine.

Is there any way of knowing if all these Patrick's stayed in Ireland, or emigrated or died young?

Thanks,

Darin, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Hello again Darin,

My name is Ian Wilkinson - a year or so ago you kindly gave me a lot of fascinating info about my Harris forebears ( I am actually going to Wembley in a couple of weeks with a Harris cousin to see the FA Vase final!). Like you I would love to find out more about Patrick/John Harris. For what it is worth my Mam thought they came from near the city oif Cork ( I believe the Harris surname is more common in Cork than in the rest of Ireland).

I am new to Rootschat.

Regards,

Ian

Hi Ian

You may be right about Cork.

I can't find anywhere in England where he mentions his origin, other than stating Ireland.

It was at my grandmothers' funeral in 2007 that my uncle mentioned that he heard they came from Meath.

Hopefully we will find out soon.

Thanks,

Darin.

Hi Darin,

This may be a duplicate , my computer is messing me about.

For what it is worth my Mam remembers being told that her Harris ancestors were fishermen who came from Cork and initially fished from Deal when they arrived in England but that is purely anecdotal.

Regards,

Ian
