I have just reread the whole thread and something else has jumped out at me --

you've mentioned that Ellen's father may have been James.
It seems to me from the workings-out above that Ellen and Elizabeth were probably cousins, not sisters
and the Thomas Brown living on the banks of the millstream in 1851 had a younger brother called James --

is this starting to come together?   :P
