Hi Halfpenny

I live in Toronto. I wouldn't mind taking a visit to Newfoundland. I've never been there. It's a bit far though...about 3,084 kilometers according to Google maps  :-\

It makes sense that they'd have the Maritime Archives there.

Hi,

Have you tried calling Toronto Family History Centre, 24 Ferrand Drive, at Don Mills and Eglinton, 416-422-5480, ext 111? If they don't have them they might be able to order a copy for you. I have found some useful things there.

Hello:)

I have a copy of the original registration of the marine accident now. I got it off FindMyPast.

I also sent an email to Whitehaven to see if they will do some research for me re crew lists and how much it will cost. It would be really helpful if the Buffalo 1904 crew list records Edward MacGowan's next of kin to verify if it's the right person. I'm still awaiting a response from them.

I wasn't aware that the FHC in Toronto can get/hold copies of crew lists. I can send an email to inquire though :)

I have found other crew lists for my grand father on FindMyPast for 1891 but not past that date.

I've also been lucky in the past finding deaths at sea info on FindMyPast  For some reason though I didn't find the one for Edward MacGowan so it was very lucky that Halfpenny found it for me.

Just to let you all know that I received a wonderful response from the Whitehaven office. They have the crew list and the log for the pertinent time frame. Unfortunately it doesn't give a next of kin. The log book gives more details about the accident and lists Edwards' personal belongings.

They also said that there was a report in the Whitehaven newspaper about the incident.  The report mentions that his wife was on the quayside at Londonderry when his body was delivered ashore and medical attention called. However it doesn't name her.

Ah well it was worth a try:) I can get copies which I plan to do.
