Mothers maiden name
« on: Thursday 22 September 11 16:38 BST (UK) »
I recently purchased a birth certificate of Frederick Olley purely because I need to know his mothers maiden name. I cant understand what it says though.

I thought it said Evans, but I can't find a marriage for a William Olley and Harriett Louisa Evans (she went by the name of Louisa in the census's and her burial, but still no luck with that name!)

I read:  "Formerly Cram".

Cram/Crom/Crum is a surname and the spelling depends upon the county.

It looks very much like Evans to me, and I can't think of anything else it could be. Maybe they married outside the country....or maybe not at all. Have you been able to find a birth for a Harriet Louisa Evans that matches the census birthplace & date?

It says her husband William Olley was born in Norfolk around 1840, and Harriett/Louisa was born in London around 1845. Can't find a birth for her. Their first child was born in London in 1863.

I cant find them together in 1871 when they should have Louisa 1863 and William 1870 with them both born London. Next Child is not til 1872.
I also cant find a conclusive William Olley born c 1843, Norfolk but there is a James William Olley Sept 1843, Norwich.
It is possible Louisa/William were born before the Marriage.
There is a large gap between Louisa and William.

If I'm looking at the right family in 1881, they live in Heigham, Norfolk. William was from Norwich and Louisa, London. The first child to have been born in Norwich was Edgar, 1873; prior to that the other children were born in London.

So I'm wondering if the older children were either illegitimate or from a previous marraige. If the latter, then Louisa's maiden name given on the children's birth cert might not match her surname as given when she married William.

If she's a widow by 1911 then married 1862

Can't find a marriage for any year though even under Harriet/t Louisa etc.

It does say on the 1911 census that she's a widow and was married for 49 years.

Very confused by all this  ???
