Something Weaver
« on: Wednesday 20 August 14 15:41 BST (UK) »
Hi,
This is the occupation of a 23 year old woman in 1851.  The second word is obviously "weaver" but I can't make out the first word.  I thought it might be "turning" but it doesn't seem to work out.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Brad.

Hi Brad,
A Turning Boy was a person who assisted the weaver by turning the bar on the loom.

Thanks Isabel!  Now you've said it, I can see "Trimming".

Sally, it's Spitalfields, London.  Thank you for the link. :)

On looks alone it seems to me slightly more like Turning Weaver than Trimming Weaver, but logic indictates that it is more likely the latter.  There is no read across from Turning Boy, he turned the loom bar, he didn't weave, what would a so called Turning Weaver actually have done?

A quick search of the British Newspaper Archive for that era brings back multiple hits for Trimming Weaver, none for Turning Weaver. I go for Trimming Weaver.

It's actually written - Triming - which is why it looks like Turning  :)
