Hi Jaro

Where was she born, please, and what is the source for the 1914 date?

Is anything else known about her - details of a marriage or death?

There was no statutory adoption in England until 1927.

Evelyn Horsfall was born in Burnley 1914.her mother was Catherine Anness (no father). She married Thomas Bennett in Fylde Lancashire in 1934.She was still going under the name of Horsefall when she married but I have been told she was adopted by a family called Barnes from Accrington. Thanks for your interest Regards Jaro

Her birth was registered in 1912 rather than 1914.

Evelyn Horsfall, mother's maiden name Anness.  Subdistrict of Colne, in Burnley registration district.

Where does the name Catherine come from for the mother?

James Horsfall and Emma Anness married in Burnley in 1899 and had a number of children up to 1920 whose birth registrations you will find on LancashireBMD.

Why do you think Catherine Anness b1899 was the mother of Evelyn Horsfall b 1912?  She would have been extremely young to give birth, and why would the child's surname be Horsfall?

I'm still not clear of your sources for the basic starting information.

It looks as though Catherine Anness married James Binns in Burnley in 1918.

Yes Catherine did marry James Binns in 1918 and yes she was very young to have a baby, thats probably why she wasnt married (these things happen!) I know the details because I have been told them by the daughter of Evelyn Bennett nee Horsfall.Evelyn is dead now but her daughter would like to know anything about her mother's upbringing and she believes the Barnes could have something to do with that.I notice you list Barnes as one of your families - any relation? regards Jaro

I recommend that Evelyn's daughter obtain her birth certificate and her marriage certificate in order to advance her research.  Index details are available on FreeBMD.

The thing is that if Catherine Anness had had a child as a single woman the child's surname would have been entered as Anness in the civil registration index.

My Barnes aren't connected - they were Scottish and emigrated to the US in the 1860s.
