Orphanage in London
« on: Saturday 21 July 12 11:45 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out some information about Isabella Gertrude Thomson Preston and the circumstances under which she went to Canada.  Isabella was born about 1880 in Chelsea, London and went to Canada in 1890.  Isabella married William Henry Lambert in Canada in 1917.

In the 1881 Census (RG11; Piece: 77; Folio: 51; Page: 23)  I think this is the entry for Isabella.  Isabella is aged one year, her mother is a widow and there is also a daughter Louisa aged 6 years (b1874).

I have come across an 1883 baptism record for Louisa Elizabeth Preston which mentions an orphanage.  I am not able to work out the name of the orphanage and if possible would like some help deciphering this.

Thank you Jennifer for providing the information re Nina and parents and siblings.  I've managed to find Nina's marriage details relating to Thomas Henry Preston in 1863.  This is recorded as Nina Eliza Thomason  Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1863  Registration district: Chelsea

I am struggling to find Nina and Thomas in 1871, after their marriage.   I believe Thomas died before 1881 as Nina is listed as a widow in the 1881 Census.   Not sure if they had other children before daughter Louisa Elizabeth in 1874.    Nina was only 17 when she married Thomas.   1863 to 1874 seems to be a long time to be without children.

Regards Kay

I can't seem to find anything on Isabella Gertrude Preston at all apart from the possible link on the 1881 census? There is no birth record for an Isabella GERTRUDE Preston in the london area.

Personally I would send off for this one though....
Isabella NINA Preston
Mar qtr 1880
Chelsea 1a 335

I can find a few things on Louisa though

Imigration to Canada, arriving 29 Sept 1883 on the Parisian as part of the Maria Rye homes group of children.

if you google Maria Rye homes there is quite a bit about her on the web

http://sca.lib.liv.ac.uk/collections/colldescs/mariarye.html

photos and illustrations of the house that Louisa first went to when she arrived in Canada and the house in Peckham that she must have resided in before leaving.
http://canadianbritishhomechildren.weebly.com/maria-rye-niagara-on-the-lake.html

Wondering how Louisa got passed from the Argyle home to Maria Rye's childrens home in Peckham.

Ah Ok, I can see where you're coming from now

Looking at Isabella's marriage cert 1 Feb 1917 Carlton Ontario

she gives her name as Isabella GERTRUDE Preston
father GEORGE Preston
mother NINA THOMPSON

interesting witnesses... Bernard and Pearl J Thomson (maybe just a coincidence with a similar sounding name as Bernard originated from Scotland)

1901/1911, she is living with William Lambert as his wife, imigration year 1890
possible
1891 Isabella THOMPSON is adopted by Robert Chapman and his wife Lavinia, living in Quebec

Isabella THOMPSON arrived in Canada 1888 age 9, taken into care by Chelsea
(collections Canada archives) although the passenger lists on An***y give her arriving into Quebec 2 Jun 1889 on the Circassian, she was also sent by the Maria Rye homes, destination Niagra on the Lake home (collections Canada archives).

I'm not sure why she travelled under the name Thompson?  She obviously knew her mother's name was Nina Thompson but didn't know her father at all which would correspond to the 1881 census.  If the girls were abandoned or Nina couldn't cope, why did Louisa go without Isabella and where did the name Gertrude come from!
