Thomas Mitchell 1773 1854

Does anyone know any information about Thomas Mitchell who was a farmer at East Orchard Dorset. He was married to Mary at Child Okeford in 1829. I would like to find out the names and places where his parents came from also if they were also farmers.

Hi,
The family are on the Dorsetopc site in the East Orchard 1851 census; Thomas, Mary + widowed daughter and two grandchildren.
It says he is a Property Landowner. There is also an Emmanuel Mitchell who married a Jane Allen in West Orchard.

Thank you I have checked that site out and added a little more detail to my search- sadly it is not clear to whom the g/children belong - also I still can't locate Thomas's family background anywhere although when I  visited the Dorset History society last week I did see the maps of the farms he owned suggesting he was quite a substantual landowner. This is intreging because for a time one of his children was in the workhouse at Fareham!

He was married to Mary at Child Okeford in 1829.

I am slightly confused with ages and names.

There is a Thomas Mitchell who married a Martha Goodfellow by licence in 1829 in East Orchard (the licence may have more details). The witnesses are a Mary Mitchell and a M/R. G. Mitchell. I have attached the entry so that you can make up your own mind about the first letter, but there is certainly a Richard Green Mitchell, yeoman in the area of about the same age (b1795 Stour Provost s Richard George and Susannah Mitchell), so perhaps he is a brother.

The 1841 census shows Thomas and Mary living with Martha, 5; and the 1851 census shows Thomas aged 76, and Mary aged 72. This suggests they would have been in their fifties when they married in 1829. Are the couple who married in 1829 he same as the ones in the 1841/51 census? There is a Martha Mary Mitchell born to Thomas and Martha Mitchell, yeoman, in Wimborne in 1836; she must be a candidate.

Unless you have other information, the best fit would be that a Thomas and Mary had a son, Thomas, in about 1800-1805, who then married Martha in 1829. There is a candidate in next door Somerset, but I can't find one in Dorset.

This may all be a red herring, but a George Mitchell of Stour Provost left a will in 1814 which mentions amongst others his wife Grace, and George, the son of his brother Thomas.

George Mitchell married Grace Eason in 1799 in Stour Provost, and Thomas Mitchell was a witness. A R.G. Mitchell was a witness at the previous marriage.

Given the 1836 baptism in Wimborne above , it may be worth looking at the 1831 will of Thomas Mitchell, yeoman of Wimborne:

Other East Orchard Mitchells include:
James M who left a will in 1772 which mentions his married sisters
Daniel M who appears in the tax return in the 1780/90s
Daniel M jr who appears from 1800 onwards
James M who is in the tax returns from about 1806
Thomas M who is there from 1805
Many of them also appear in poll books and jury lists

There is also a very full Mitchell tree on ancestry that suggests that most of the above might be correct. It has (amongst others) Daniel M (1700-1737) father of Daniel M (1729-1803) father of Richard George M (1769-1845) & Thomas M (1772-1854) father of Thomas M (1805-     ), etc.

I haven't looked at all the evidence, but it looks consistent and logical.
