Lockhart & Ramage (or Rammage) in North Berwick
« on: Sunday 09 November 08 19:47 GMT (UK) »
Anybody else researching the surnames Lockhart or Ramage/Rammage in East Lothian?

My ancestor Mary Lockhart nee Ramage/Rammage born on 29th May 1761 in North Berwick and died in 1857 aged 99 (but actually 95 as her birth in the OPR's confirms).
She was married to John Lockhart (born 14th March 1762 in North Berwick) on 3rd June 1784 at Gladsmuir, Haddington.

I found them both alive, John aged 80 and Mary aged 81 living in East Street, North Berwick in the 1841 census.

I know Mary's parents were James Rammage and Christian Hogg who were married on 6th May 1750 in North Berwick. According to the OPR entry James was from North Berwick and Christian from Athelstanford.

From the OPR's they had the following children:
William 1753
James 1755
James 1760
Mary 1761(my line)
James 1763

So if anybody has any more info on these Lockharts or Rammages please get in touch.

Cheers,
Derek.

Hi Derek,

I don't know if you have this info, but John Lockhart was buried 13th Aug 1841 at North Berwick. His age is given as 79 years.

Also from a RootsWeb post, their daughter Janet married a Hugh Aitchison. She died 5th December 1862 in North Berwick aged 66.

Many thanks Hume,

I had no record of Janet, just her sister and brother Thomas.

Cheers,
Derek.

Hi Derek,

It looks like Hugh Aitchison was actually Hope Aitchison. This looks like them in 1851:

Address: North Berwick House, North Berwick, East Lothian
Hope Aitchison, m, head, 61, forester, b. Dirleton
Janet ", f, wife, 52, forester's wife, b. North Berwick

1841 and 1861 (from Freecen) shows the same ... doesn't look like there was any children between them.

Anybody else researching the surnames Lockhart or Ramage/Rammage in East Lothian?

I am searching for Ramages but they came to ireland from Scotland as 'planted' settlers. In my searches I have often come across a Lockhart Ramage in in Ireland from 1820s on (that I have seen)  The combination of names is most unusual and must surely be some relation/Connection. Perhaps you know of him already?  Appears on FS & on this site http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/
