Curragh Camp detainees 1920s

Does anybody know if there is a record anywhere of the Irish Volunteers who were detained in the Curragh in the 1920s?

Thanks for those links Kamilla. I was looking for a record of names of the prisoners. Family lore says that my grandmother's eldest brother was there. I know her brothers were all involved in the Irish Volunteers and two of them ran away to Canada & never returned. The other was apparently captured and detained in the Curragh.

These records are available in the Military Archives Office in Cathal Brugha Barracks, Rathmines, Dublin. However, the Archives are currently closed and will not re-open until May 31st. There are about 10 big boxes of records from the War of Independence (Correction: Civil War - Cathal Brugha has Civil War Records only! See second post below!)        , but they are not indexed and you will need to devote a huge amount of time to searching them. However, I have searched them and have some lists of prisoners in the Curragh, so if you give me the name and address of your granduncle, I MAY be able to help you.

Thanks very much for that information jud72. My granduncle was Maurice Neville from Donoughmore, Co Cork. Spending hours going through papers is nothing new to me so good to know that the records are available.

Just realised that I made a silly mistake in saying that the Military Archives in Cathal Brugha has records from the War of Independence. It only has records from the Civil War! 10 big boxes of them! However, they do have written statements that were taken from some of the veterans of the War of Independence during the 1950's. These statements were mostly taken from local leaders and commanders though.

The National Archives in Kew, London has the records on the War of Independence. Once again, they are not very well indexed so expect to spend quite a bit of time there. They have books detailing the sentences handed down during court martials, so if your granduncle was actually sentenced, then he would probably be included there. However, most prisoners were simply interned without trial.

I think that the only internment camp whose records still survive at Kew was the Curragh. I have photos of some of those records but the only Nevilles that are listed were three from Tullamore, Co. Offaly. However, the records I have are from the second half of 1921 so it may be that he had been there at an earlier date.

Hi agho,

I also had a great uncle interred in tin town curragh camp in early 1920s. He was Peter White from Dublin and was on  hunger strike there.  Just wondering if you have any more information on the time in the camp then or lists of detainees??

Thanks

Ger
