brothers John and William RICHMOND, alive 1842
« on: Thursday 23 October 14 10:12 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the ancestry of brothers John and William RICHMOND.
I am also after leads on the ancestry of John’s wife, Maria URQUHART.

All I know about William RICHMOND is ;
1838 – he was sole partner of William RICHMOND and Company, carry on business in Glasgow as silk manufacturers (Scottish Jurist, 1838 page 415)

I am happy that I know a lot about John RICHMOND and his descendants ;
abt 1796 John RICHMOND was born
John RICHMOND was described in his daughter’s marriage as “late of Cuff, Ayrshire”
abt 1800 Maria URQUHART was born
1827 John married Maria URQUHART in both Hamilton, Lanark and 2 days later in Glasgow
1828 their daughter Mary Ann RICHMOND
1831 their daughter Agnes Muir RICHMOND
abt 1834 their daughter Maria RICHMOND
abt 1837 their son John RICHMOND
1839 they all migrated to South Australia aboard the Ariadne

Can anyone help me please?

Grantley

Hi Grantley ,

Have you found William on the Census ?
Looking at http://www.freecen.org.uk/ Census transcriptions there is a Wm. Richmond aged 58 merchant(clothes) in 1851 which may be a possible(you will also find him on the 1841 transcription).

Quote
1827 John married Maria URQUHART in both Hamilton, Lanark and 2 days later in Glasgow
John and Maria would not have been married twice , one or both of the records will probably be Banns(announcement of intent to marry).

Added -
The 1851 - 1852 Post Office directory has a William Richmond of William Richmond & Co. , house 1 Queen Terrace.
That is the same address as the 1851 Census.

With all of Ev's findings, just adding the 1851 here for reference that you found Ev:

Wm Richmond 58 merchant (clothes) b. Lanark
Marion Richmond 56 b. Glasgow
Agnes Richmond 29 b. Glasgow...I think this might be her birth https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FM9Z-X29
Marion Richmond 22 b. Glasgow...and Marion https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FM9X-T6X
Janet Mcqueen 23 servant
Agnes Queener 20 servant

Address: 1 Queen Terrace, Barony

Likely marriage or banns here https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTB6-NHZ

I can't see the family of William so far in 1861, but thought this might be Marion's death notice in Ireland:

December 27 1861

December 15, at Lenon Vale, Ramelton, county Donegal, MARION PAIRMAN, relict of WILLIAM RICHMOND, ESQ., formerly of Glasgow

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/aughnishbmdnotices.htm

Marion showing as 'relict'/widow of William by this date. Not sure where William Richmond died. Can't see a death for him between 1855-61 and the start of official registration in Scotland. He may have died in Ireland?

This looks the most obvious birth entry for Marion Pearman https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQHP-LPX

So we have Marion and William's marriage from the OPRs in 1819. Then I saw this entry with the birth of a child Elizabeth (which I thought might connect with Marion's possible name). Would fit as first born to William and Marion, also in the right area of the marriage in the Gorbals....however, there is an additional surname of Moody. Adding it now in case we can find anything that connects:  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQHP-LPX

Given we have no sons (?) for William and Marion, we only have a few children as showing in 1841 (there is an Elizabeth there  ::)), Agnes and Marion.

Have a look at the Glasgow Herald -  http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=GGgVawPscysC - simply add year for search to see what issues may be available (insert a year in 'Date' box). From 4 November in 1862:

From the google link above for the Glasgow Herald, have a look at the 13 February in 1826. Other Richmond names; brothers, extended family?

Cuff is the name of a farm at Beith in Ayrshire. There is also a Cuff Hill.
The farm which is now a Listed Building was the property in 1820/1822 of a John Urquhart.

Just realised that John Urquhart of Cuff Farm could be a lead on your search for the ancestry of Maria Richmond m.s. Urquhart.     ;D
