Question re Shipping Manifest...........
« on: Tuesday 12 August 14 00:14 BST (UK) »
James LANIGAN arrived in New Zealand in 1877 per the 'Apelles'.

In the remarks column beside his entry on the ship's manifest, is written 'Auckland 1245  1'

Can anyone tell me what these numbers relate to please.

The page on which this passenger's name appears has only one other similar entry.

Hi Minniehaha,

Only guessing, but perhaps its a reference number to another document or file relating to immigration or the individual's sponsor.

Hi Spades,

That is a possibility, but I have just gone back to the manifest and checked the rest of the 'Single Men' who were listed as 'Assisted Emigration to Auckland' and found that only one other male has a similar notation, his being 'Auckland 1283 1'.

I thought maybe age had something to do with it as James Lanigan was only 16 years old, but the other male was 27 years old. Some listed as men were aged 15, one being only 12 years, with nothing in the remarks column beside their names.

'Tis a mystery..........

Hmmm...perhaps Auckland Museum or the Auckland office of Archives New Zealand might have the answer.

The filmed passenger names & ship details appear on the LDS website. Would the LDS hold the original manifest, or would that be here in New Zealand?

Hi Minnie,

Wonder if getting in touch with the  The Family Research Centre (NZSG) in Panmure  as well.... can't remember typing anything like that when I did shipping transcriptions .... Ticket Numbers and money owning at the other end were the ones that stand out in the remarks column.

Cheers

I will give the Museum & Archives a ring tomorrow Spades.

Re the Family Research Centre KHP, as I am not a member they may be unwilling to assist. However, I can but try.......

Thank you both for your suggestions.

Non-members are allowed entry to the Center Minnie,  entry fee might be a bit higher than members,  so a phone call/letter wouldn't be dismissed, afterall, they are there to help people find their family and if you strike lucky, you could give a small donation.
