1968 - MURRAY - William -- aged 66 years.

Tauranga Presbyterian Cemetery.

Hello...

Tauranga Presbyterian cemetery fiche D03.12 has the following...

William Murray
Died 11 Jan 1968 aged 67 years
62132 2nd NZEF

His wife Edith Mary
Died 9 May 1968 aged 63 years

Corresponds to WW2 Nominal Roll No.4

Murray, William
62132, Private, Inf Reinfs
Occupation: Baker's Labourer
Last address: 34 School Road, Morningside, Auckland
Next of kin: Mrs C.H Murray (wife) 34 School Road, Morningside, Auckland

The discrepancies with the wives initials might be explained by the following...

BDM NZ Marriages: 1923/8797 - William MURRAY to Hilda Colin HOLDEN
(most likely Hilda Collins HOLDEN b.1901)

BDM NZ Deaths: 1948/16808 - MURRAY, Colin Hilda

BDM NZ Marriages: **19xx/xxxx - William MURRAY to Edith Mary HINDO

**Ooops... sorry. Not actually allowed to print the marriage info in black and white but the event occurred the same year as the first wife died.

Regards
Beg

But also going through somemore information that Jeanette had found for me was Thomas's record of death and there are three females aged 68,50 and 47 and one male aged 54 which will be William and Thomas died on the 6 June 1955.

Hi again Oletta

Could you just clarify please, if above information re: Thomas' record of death, came from the funeral director ?     And was Thomas' death notice ever sourced ??

   ~  Lu

Hi Lu,

I obtained the information from Twentymans the funeral directors,I also have copies of the death notices for Jean Bull,Edward Bull and Jessie Linton,I found the file only last week on an old external hardrive

Cheers Janette

Hi Oletta

Sorry I didn't get back earlier to add details I had for William MURRAY - 66 - died 1968 ... but they are essentially the same as that, now posted by Beg.

Despite a similarity in age and the fact that the "Tauranga" William MURRAY lived for a time in Auckland (up to 1948), I'm not convinced that this man is the son of Thomas MURRAY.

Normally I would treat electoral roll listings with a good deal of caution (there are known errors - e.g. names not removed from rolls, etc. etc.).   However, in 1928 and 1931, William MURRAY (occupation:  carrier / carter) and his first wife Hilda Colin MURRAY, appear on the Roskill (Auckland) rolls.

And in those same years, there are the listings (see previous post # 35) for William MURRAY, occupation;  waterside worker, (Auckland Central electorate).

Additionally, and perhaps importantly, is the confirmation (refer Reply #  33  ) that "William [son of Barbara MURRAY] was described as a watersider living at Devonport in his mother's 1930 probate."

Dear All

Sorry I have not got back to you all soon.  Thank you very much for the information and hard work involved in looking for William Murray, I realised sometime ago it would not be easy to find him!

Lucy2

Is Waterside a District in Davenport, New Zealand?

Oletta

Hi Oletta,

No, Waterside isn't a district in Devonport.

A Waterside Worker - another name is a Dockie Labourer, Wharfie, Stevedore, they work on the waterside or waterfront moving cargo between ships and transport (trucks and trains etc).

He probably worked over the water in Auckland, or it could have been the Devonport Naval Base.   I stand to be corrected.

Cheers

Work was hard to find in those years as NZ was going into a depression

Hello Janette and Kiwihalfpint

Thank you both for the information on New Zealand in the 1930's it looked very bleak!!.  I did wonder for a time why William never followed in his Father's footsteps and became a Tailor, but now I understand a little more.  Or maybe he just wanted a complete change and took what he could get as work!!!

Thank you for informing me what a Waterside is!!

Best Wishes
Oletta
