And if the other type of number applies to the "Register of the Poor" - do you know if this still exists?  And if so, is it available?

I thought the only  Poor Law records available at The Mitchell were the actual "Applications"... but have never actually been there (would love to visit one day - and maybe spend weeks there!!!)...

You'd be best to e-mail the Glasgow City Archives with all these questions.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
