« on: Wednesday 06 August 14 18:42 BST (UK) »
Trying to find birth record of mary Elizabeth prestley who lived in New York , Richmond Hill.
She was born in 1878 and had 3 sisters . Her Mother was Jane Prestley from ireland . I can't find out who her Father was.
Anyone with any details who could help me?
Sisters Sarah, Ann and Theresa.
According to census records her Mother Jane immigrated in 1868.
I look forward to receiving any information. She may have had a cousin Edith Prestley

Thanks

When is the latest you have these folks in the census?  Marriage or death records might reveal some information about the father.

1915 Jane was shown as a widow.
Mary died July 1983 aged over 100 years.
I have various pieces of info but cannot find details of who the father was or her parents marriage.
1925 they are still on census.
Mary never married. She was a school teacher and an amateur painter.
She owned a holiday home at Schroon lake.

Do you have a death certificate for Mary?

Otherwise, if she is on the Social Security Death Index, you could order her original Social Security application for a fee.  http://genealogy.about.com/od/online_records/a/ss5_request.htm  If she knew her father's name, it should be included on there.

Theresa's obituary says that her father died in 1884- http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=85095815  You can see an entry for her on the New York City Death Index at www.italiangen.org.  The death certificate could be ordered for free through the Family History Center Photoduplication Services.  https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Photoduplication_Services

The 1900 census lists Jane as a widow and the family in Geneseo, New York.  There are a lot of references to this family in newspapers from upstate and Queens, New York on www.fultonhistory.com.

On www.fultonhistory.com, if you search for the exact phrase "Robert Prestly" (with no 2nd e in Prestly), a detailed obituary for Jane should be the top result.  It says they married in 1874.

This appears to be Robert & Jane in the 1875 state census - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VNVS-WB8

They appear to be mistranscribed as Pretty in the 1880 census - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MZNK-DX9

Thank you so much for all this information. I will check the sites you suggest. Mary was related to our family although I don't know the exact connection. When we were growing up in 1960s she used to send us presents to northern ireland and wrote letters to my mother.

Have looked at all the references you suggested and found that Jane came from Seafin in co down. My father came from a mile or two from seafin. So thanks for your help.
I still can't find any info on Robert prestleys marriage or death. Nor can I find when he came to America from Ireland.
Once again Iwould welcome any information
Thanks
