Emily Edith Gawler
« on: Friday 13 January 12 23:29 GMT (UK) »
Emily Edith Tanser married George Gawler July 1880 at St Helier's Parish church. She appears on the 1881 census & a daughter Edith was born sometime 1882-1884.
That is the last I can find her,George Gawler married again in 1885 in England.
Did she die or was she abandoned?

Where and when was Emily born?

When George married in 1885 - does he show himself as a widower?

Where was daughter Edith in 1891?

No help in finding out what happened to Emily but her daughter Edith was born 13/11/1881 and baptized 12/10/1881, her godparents were the father and Elizabeth Jane Parsons.

Elizabeth Jane Parsons was Emily's sister (see the 1861 for Rugby, Warwickshire) and had a child Edmund George, on the same day as Emily had Edith, baptized 10/10/1881.

George was born in Jersey 8/3/1856, parents John Gawler and Susan Nicolle.

I can have a quick look in the death indexes next week.

Thank you for your interest.
Carole ,Emily was born 1860 Rugby. In 1891 & 1901 Edith was with Thomas & Louisa Handy on the Wales censuses,in 1891 described as Edith Handy & in 1901 Edith Gawler niece,
I am guessing that Loisa may have been a sister to George Gawler, since she was born Channel Islands.I don't have George's 2nd marriage cert. so I don't know how he described himself.
Jerseylily thank you for your information the link looks very interesting.I would appreciate the lookup.

Hi G Eli
Have just come across your post from 2012.
George Gawler is my maternal great grandfather. He married Amelia Williams in Bristol and had 4 more daughters and one son. George was a ships rigger and eventually they moved to Manchester and the family settled there. I have some information about what happened to Edith but not quite sure where I have it. Let me know if you get this message after all this time and I will look it out for you.
Rest assured she was not abandoned, Emily died in Jersey not sure whether it was in child birth or when Edith was very young. For a long time she was brought up by her Aunt.
Are you related to Emily?
Best wishes
Chris

Hi Chris.
Just received your post, Emily's father was my 2xGg uncle. I am still interested in what happened to Emily.
I have found more information on Edith. I think she married Robert Reade and had at Least two children, Violet and Stanley but any thing is welcome.
Thank you
Liz

Hi Liz,
My cousin went to Jersey but could find no record of death for Emily and neither could the registrars! We are assuming she died because he married Amelia six months after Edith was born and I believe he took Edith with him although as you guessed she was brought up by George's sister. I have a copy of George and Amelia's  marriage certificate and it describes him as a widower. My mum used to say that George and Louisa fell out because he wanted Edith to come and live with them as part of the family and they wouldn't let her.
Yes Edith married Robert Reade in June 1901 and had Violet 1902 and Stanley Robert in 1905. She also had another daughter Maureen Muriel in 1926. After Robert died she married Harry Edward Tuckey in 1932. Edith I think died in Hastings in 1969. Stanley married a lady from Brighton and lived in Battle.
I know very little about Violet or Stanley although I know Aunty Vi moved to a place in Cornwall and is buried in Morval Church, near Looe (which coincidentally is only 20-30 minutes away from where I live now) Maureen was married twice and had a daughter in 1945 and a son in 1960 both in Cornwall. I think she is also buried with Auntie Vi and her daughter now lives in the cottage. Harry Tuckey must have gone over to stay with Vi as he remarried in Cornwall in 1973 and died in 1985.
Well that has turned into a bit of an essay, hope it helps.
