FOOT family - Lymington
« on: Wednesday 14 March 07 15:37 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for;

1.  The baptism of George Foot.  From census entries his dob varies between 1819 - 1822 & states he was born in Lymington.  Familysearch is not showing anything & I can't find him on the 1841 census in the hope he was with his parents.  1851 he's unmarried & a Coastguardman at Alverstoke, Hants.  1861, 1871, 1881 & 1891 he's still a coastguard at Landport, Portsea.

2.  The marriage of George Foot which would have been between 1851 & 1855 the date of the birth of his first child.  It's not yet on FreeBMD but her name was Mary & she also says she's from Lymington.  The marriage might have been at Lymington or Alverstoke where George was in 1851.

Many thanks,

jane

There are a couple of George FOOTs of about the right age, not born in county, in Dorset.

The other possibility is that he was at sea, especially as he was near Portsmouth in 1851.

Middx - VAUS, ROBERTS, EVERSFIELD, INMAN, STAR, HOLBECK, WYATT, BICKFORD, SMITH, REDWOOD
Hants - SMALL, HAMMERTON, GRIST, FRYER, TRODD, DAGWELL, PARKER, WOODFORD, CROUTEAR, BECK, BENDELL, KEEPING, HARDING, BULL
Kent - BAYLY, BORER, MITCHELL, PLANE, VERNON, FARRANCE, CHAPMAN, MEDHURST, LOMAX, WYATT, IDEN
Devon - TOPE, BICKFORD, FOSTER
YKS - QUIRK, McGUIRE, BENN
Nott/Derbs - SLACK
Herts - BARNES
L'pool- PLUMBE

Thanks for your reply Bearkat.  I noticed that the FOOT name is quite a Dorset favourite but I'm sure he was born Lymington as I've just found him in the index of Registers of Seaman's Services at the TNA site & it gives a DOB of 1/2/1821, Lymington.  As he was a RN Coastguard at Portsea I would assume he was land-based but he's just not showing on the 1841  :(
If anyone else can come up with his baptism, marriage or pin him down on the 1841 I'd be very grateful, if not hugely impressed  ;)

Hi Jane

Two by the name of George Foot baptised in Hampshire but neither in Lymington  :-\

George Foot baptised 28 Oct 1821 St Lawrence & St John, Southampton parents William & Anne
George Thomas Foot baptised 27 Jan 1822 St Mary Southampton parents John & Frances.

I wonder of George was from a non-conformist family?

As a point of interest, not all coastguards were necessarily shore based.  Some where stationed on what they called portguard ships (certainly in the later 19th century).  Admittedly the ships were close to port, but it still was not dry land!  Many Coastguard were ex RN.

Just checked Lymington again - there was a Foot family there at about the correct time - a Richard & Jane had three children baptised there 1815-19: Harriet, Richard & William.  But no sign of George.

Hi Nell,
Many thanks for your input, especially about the coastguards.
Bearkat had given me the information (by PM) about the two George's which I've noted & also about the NC option.  Bearkat also gave me the information about this Richard & Jane in Lymington.  Is your information from the pr's?  It's definately a hot lead as the names, Richard, Jane & Harriet are to be found with George's children.
If your information is not from the registers any idea where I can get a look-up as I'm not in the UK?
This George Foot has a service record listed on the TNA site which gives his dob as 1/2/1821, Lymington (of course he could be telling porkie pies)

Downloading his service record from the National Archive website may give his next of kin but it looks likely that his parents were dead.

His marriage certificate, if you can find the entry, would confirm his father's name.

Thanks Bearkat.  There could be  a UK visit in the near future, in which case I'll be ransacking the TNA for information (I have a long list  :D)
I have another service record for another rellie & it doesn't give a next of kin  :(  Why do you say his parents were dead?

The marriage to MARY (between 1851 -1855) is yet another 'to-do' task.  Not on the IGI & not on Pallots & not on Familyhistory online.
