Dayton, Ohio, Newspapers Obituaries
« on: Sunday 23 November 14 06:21 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,
This web site http://www.daytonmetrolibrary.org/hobits/
says you can get obituaries from Dayton newspapers.
I emailed one request some six weeks ago, and have had no answer.
Has any one had success with this?
I have now found that a cousin died at the age of 100 (in 1995) - I would love to see what her obit says.
Thank You
Jean

If you include the name and date of death here, maybe someone in the area will be able to access the obit on another website.  As to your question about the length of wait, maybe they are inundated with requests and you just have to wait your turn.

There are some Dayton newspapers online that you could check yourself:

http://www.genealogybank.com/gbnk/obituaries/explore/USA/Ohio/Dayton/

http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/archive/

You might be able to see enough from the free snippets shown to get your answer.

Thank you Genealiza and shellyesq,
Thank you for the replies and the links.

I am now wondering if I am expecting too much. The entry for my 100 year old cousin just reads
GIBSON, Anna, 100, of Centerville, Tuesday. (Routsong, Kettering)
This is from the Dayton Daily news, 13 July 1995.

I had expected details such as - widow of the late ?, mother of ?, husband an Australian, chairwoman of ?, a keen gardener ?

The names of my family in Dayton are:
Anna Gibson 1 June 1895 - 11 July 1995
her daughter Rosemary Anna Trezevant 1916 - 11 Sept 1993,
Rosemary's husband Robert Bevan Trezevant 1915 - 30 May 1997
and their daughter Nancy Grey Trezevant 1943 - 3 May 1981.

I am reluctant to sign up to genealogybank as you can only cancel by telephone, and calling from NZ would mean keeping a watch on Time Zones.

I am pleased to have their vital dates.
Regards
Jean

The Dayton Daily News site lets you read the full article for free, and it only seems to have death notices without further detail.

Are you interested in looking for information on her family?
www.familysearch.org will provide some information, including death info, census, etc.

The Ohio Death Index states that she was born in California and that her last name was Gwerder.

The California Birth Index states Rosemary's dob as 27 July

Thank You again,

I do suspect that I was expecting too much from a death notice. Here in NZ a typical notice will have birth and death dates, immediate family names, place of death, place of service, place of burial.
I have managed to get all those details for the Trezevant family from other sources.
Regards
Jean

Some papers in the US do have more detail, but some don't.  Some require payment to put in a detailed obituary.
