Jonathan Steel 1783 Stapleton death date
« on: Monday 25 August 14 13:15 BST (UK) »
Hello

Jonathan Steel, son of John and Isabel Steel was born in Stapleton in 1783

This is him in the 1851 census at White Close Cottage, Stapleton

Head   Jonathan Steel   68
Son-in-Law   Henry Brown   35
Daughter   Ann Brown   36
Granddaughter   Margaret Brown   11
Lodger   Mary Ann Irving   24
Nurse Child   Jane Phillips   3

When did he die?

There is a possible Jonathan Steel in 1861 living in Durham aged 82, but I am not sure if its him and I cannot find a matching death record

my thanks

The 1861 for Fellside Durham says Jonathan was born 1799 Stapleton. He is a visitor with the Lucook family - have you found any links to that family ?  Ann was born in Stapleton, could she be related ?

Robert Lucook  53 Born Kirklinton.
Ann Lucook  46 Born Stapleton.
John Lucook  23 Born Halkshestle, Northumberland.
Elizabeth Lucook  18 Born  Thorngrafton, Northumberland.
Joseph Lucook  10 Born Whickham, Durham.
Jonathan Steel  82 Born Stapleton. 1779.  Visitor.
David Tweddle  44 Lodger born Stapleton.

Why do you doubt it is him. He is living with Robert Lucock who married Ann Brown, presumably nee Ann Steel widow of Henry Brown, Jonathan's daughter   :-\

I have not double checked this but could it be right.

Getting back to the main subject of these posts, there is a gravestone in Stapleton churchyard that states Jonathan Steal [sic] died 12th November 1861 aged 82. His wife Margaret died at Whiteclose Cott. Stapleton in 1849 aged 67.

On what is now the reverse of the stone are the deaths of Ann Steal (1774) and Isabella Steal (1811) wives of John Steal who died in 1816 aged 99.

Hope this helps.

Yes that is the gravestone of the parents of Jonathan Steel, born 1783, Isabel Haddon and John Steel.

The Jonathan Steel buried there is a different Jonathan, there are about four in one generation

Jonathan born 1751
Jonathan born 1773
Jonathan born 1778
Jonathan born 1783
