help finding information (Edward Butler)
« on: Monday 14 March 11 21:52 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone
I'm wondering if anyone can help me find information out about my 3rd Great Grandfather Edward Butler. I've tried looking before but didn't have any luck, but i've found a bit more information out now but unfortunately I only have access to free sites at the moment and i've exhausted those.
I don't have a lot to go on really. He was a fisherman so he doesn't appear on the 1881 census with the rest of his family. So I don't know his place of birth, but he moved to Grimsby, Lincolnshire sometime between 1868 and 1876. His wife and eldest daughter's birth place is Gorleston, Suffolk, according to 1881 census.
What I do know is this, his name is Edward Butler, this is definitely true, it's also on his daughter Ada's marriage certificate.
His marriage to his wife Eliza Clarke shows up on FreeBMD as taking place in Mutford March 1865.
There is a possible match in the 1881 census, a fisherman on board the 'Leader', at the time its location is Ayr (scotland I think). I checked and there was a Grimsby fishing ship called 'Leader'. But there is no place of birth written down but the year of birth is 1845 which does fit.
His wife was called Eliza Clarke (b1848) his daughters were called Alice Eliza born 1868 and Ada Mary Ann born 1876.
According to a lady I spoke to he lost touch with the rest of his family and was living away in London towards the end of his life and when he died there was a notice in the national press which his daughter saw and was given some money. Not sure about the accuracy of that story though.
There is also a possibility that his father was called William Butler and he may have had a brother called Charles. (This is completely new information to me)
Anyway, I know that's a long message and not much information to go on but if anyone could spare any time I would really appreciate any help. I'd just like to find out where he came from and who his parents and family were.
Thanks again
Hayley

Hello Hayley  :)

If you send for the marriage certificate you may find Edward's father's name and occupation. This would help you to trace him in earlier censuses and perhaps obtain his birth certificate.

Can't say for definate that this is Edward Butler on 1851 census with his family, place & year of birth roughly same - marriage certificate of Edward & Eliza would confirm both father's names & occupation

Thank you everyone for your help, I really appreciate the fact you've taken your time to help me :) That definitely seems to fit with Eliza.
I do need to get some certificates to help me out, but unfortunately I haven't got the money to do so at the moment.
Thanks again :)

Thanks for that last message.
I have a feeling that although Eliza thought he died, he actually didn't die he just went and lived somewhere else. Because someone who I have been in touch with recently said they remembered his death being in the paper or something and his daughter Ada collected some money she was left but this was a lot later on than 1901. But I don't know why he would move away from the family and say he was dead. I was told that happened around 1940.
But then again that is speculation as I don't know the full story
Thanks again
