Thomas Pritchard Mackenery
« on: Friday 26 September 14 03:52 BST (UK) »
HELP! I cannot find details about my great grandfather Thomas Harley Pritchard Mackenery. All I know is that he was born in approximately 1873. He was married to my great grandmother, Mabel Hadden, in 1917 in London (St. George Hannover Sq). I have a copy of their marriage certificate, which states his father as an "Inspector of Mines" named Duncan Pritchard Mackenery. I have no idea where either Thomas or Duncan were born. I figured Scotland would be a possibility due to the surname and the mine inspecting. At the time of his marriage, Thomas lived in Hove England.

PS. There's another marriage certificate from 1908 in England of a fellow with a similar name, but I've not got any details of this marriage. Perhaps a previous marriage.

Any help would be incredibly appreciated, and if you can help me, I'll respect you forever.

Have you tried finding Thomas on the 1901 or 1911 Census? That would give you where he said he was born.

Not sure if this is your man but...

There's an interesting entry in the Prisoners Calendar for a Harley Mackenery aged 49, secretary.

Previous conviction for bigamy - given 12 months 18/10/1909 as Thomas Henry Wycherley.

29/03/1922 tried and found guilty of bigamy - marrying Edith Lilian Harvey, despite his current wife being then alive. sentenced to 9 months h.l. (hard labour?).

There's a newspaper article about the case from the Hartlepool Mail 30/03/1922.

It talks about Harold Mackenery having a "mania for marrying". Prosecuting counsel listed his 4 marriages, only the first of which was genuine in 1893 when he married under the name of Witchley "which was understood to be his correct name".

On his first marriage he was only 20 and his wife 16. He left her in 1908 and "married" again the same year. In 1909 he got 12 months hard labour. He married again in 1915 and then again in 1917.

A police witness said Mackenery was a native of Bilston, Staffordshire. He met his final wife while nursing "The Sultan of Mulk at Brighton". 9 months hard labour was the sentence passed.

There is a Thomas Henry Wycherley born during the quarter June 1873 at Wolverhampton  volume 6b page 634.
And interestingly I found this on Familysearch - 1881 England Census
9 Beckett Street Bilston Staffordshire -
Henry Whytcherley   Head   M   55   Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England
Boadica Whytcherley   Wife   F   48   Bilston, Staffordshire, England
John Whytcherley   Son   M   21   Bilston, Staffordshire, England
Martha Whytcherley   Daughter   F   12   Bilston, Staffordshire, England
Thomas Whytcherley   Son   M   7   Bilston, Staffordshire, England
James Pritchard   Visitor   M   32   Bilston, Staffordshire, England

Father Henry is a coal miner, as is brother John. Love his mother's name - Boadica  :D
And best of all look at the surname of their visitor  - James Pritchard -  he's a coal miner too.

Looby  :)
