Birth Record Dilemma
« on: Tuesday 13 May 14 04:10 BST (UK) »
An ancestor's death record states that she was born at Dalhousie, County of Edinburg.  I don't find such a place anywhere!!  Just getting started on this Scottish research journey.   Any suggestions on where to look would be most appreciated.

There is a Dalhousie Castle in Midlothian about 8 miles south of Edinburgh. I would think your ancestor was born somewhere on the Dalhousie estate.

Hi Sue SKS,
Welcome to Rootschat !
Do you have an idea of when your ancestor was born? If it was after 1855 a record of her birth should be found on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.  1855 was the year Statutory Records began. If she was born pre-1855 there could still be a record of her birth/baptism in the OPR's (Old Parish Records}, these can also be found on the Scotlands People website.
Scotlands People is the official BMD site for Scotland. It is a pay to view site but if you are careful costs can be kept low. £7 buys 30 credits and 6 credits would be used to view one record. Problem is you can waste credits looking at the wrong person.
If you feel you need further assistance narrowing down your lady before spending money on Scotlands People start a thread with the details you know about your ancestor and I know lots of Rootschatters will lend a hand. We're a friendly bunch!
Good luck with your research,
Looby :)

You need a better search engine!  ;)

Dalhousie is in the parish of Cockpen in the county of Midlothian. The county of Midlothian was known for a time as the county of Edinburgh or Edinburghshire, but the old name was formally restored by Act of Parliament in 1928.

Dalhousie Castle should have come up in any search for the name. It is a historic castle, now a hotel and popular wedding venue. http://www.dalhousiecastle.co.uk/index.php/home/

See also http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NT3263

What this means is that any records of your people will be in the records of the parish of Cockpen, so that is where you need to look for them.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
